What did you do in the garden today?

Hay and straw are too pricey here to use it just for compost. I have more than enough brown material with my little almost quarter acre woods.

At the farm stores are bags of hardwood bedding PELLETS. They expand like mad when damp and are great in the compost Break down quick and aerate the compost

I hate straw in my runs it mats up. I use wood chips, big and chunky, delivered by a local tree company for free. I use about 1' of wood chips in the whole run. Once or twice a year (usually after spring thaw) I rake it around.

I love my flakes and bedding pellets in the run.

We have our coops in a yard on the side of the house. That entire yard was coveted in straw and that matting made it nice to walk on when it rained. Loved it, but my flock doesn't spend a lot of time in there.

I mean that your area is very wet. When I lived there, we had 76 days with only 3 periods of sunshine.

I just don’t understand why I’m so stubborn (maybe stupid) but I’m going with wood chips after I get the ground work done. I’m constantly switching things up till I find something that works. Glad to hear the chips are working for ya.
Wish it was as easy for me. In the desert we just don’t have the trees. So...I’ll make the 8 hour (round trip) and go to Walmart or Home Depot or Star Nurseries...I promise you I’m like a kid in Disney Land! It’s a really big deal for me to go shopping lol.

This is how I spent my day or part of it made two loaves of french bread 1 dozen biscuits of the same but then went after 6 OE then bought a new kitchen toy it is Cavatelli maker it has a learning curve do not try it first for main meal

Wow really neat huh how old the plant .. The new Zealand spinach I planted today says it is perennial want to see if it will be many of my herbs are...

We had pretty bad flooding this year from our creek. I'm debating turning over some of the dirt and plopping in some sunflowers. It's clay soil, but the creek deposited a bit of sediment. Am I just wishful thinking or are sunflowers pretty tough? I know they grow awesome here with loosened soil in the garden....

Sunflowers can grow almost anywhere there's full sun, IMO. I had several that shot up in the yard this fall, from the hens or the wild birds. Go for it!
