What did you do in the garden today?

Thought to share some of my successful blooms. I planted all of these after danger of frost passed, outdoor, from seeds.
Zinnias.

Crackerjack Marigold. I like this variety because it grows BIG.

Here is something I decided to keep. (the weed portion)

It is the result of my friends (squirrels) planting sunflower seeds into my pots. This happened before I used the Critter Riddler. :gig
BTW, I prefer the Tomcat deterrent much more, since it is not affected by rain:).

Below is a pix of some Plum Tree sprouts I dug up and potted for someones garden. These are root sprouts, but if dug up with substantial soil root ball, transplant well. They are best in my experience, to be nursed in a pot with daily watering, and occasional fertilizing. Putting into ground is also acceptable, but needs to be watched more closely and watered more, since summer dry earth seems to consume the water quickly. When these go dormant in autumn, ideally transplanted into permanent location.

If any of you haven't tried or looked the Old Farmers Almanac website I highly recommend it. And no I'm not getting a kick back from them.:hit I've been using their site for years and have found it to be invaluable.
I'm not sure how much pull I have, But I will contact them and suggest the following.

Garden: It's growing! We have an exchange student with us for a few weeks. Student likes potatoes, so I had her come to the garden with me and I loosened the soil in the potato bed and then turned a shovelful over, and she gasped with surprise at the potatoes! So I had her gather enough for lunch. She enjoyed them!

Lost Chicken: So, we had lost our white chicken that was being doctored for bumble foot and that we had left in an open topped small enclosure for the day. A half hour after we checked on her, we decided to go put her on a roost in the coop for the night (her first night back with the flock) but she wasn't there!!!! We looked all over that evening, and several times the next day. Today we found her and she is fine. The bad news is that she was in our outbuilding the whole time, roosting on spouse's wood rack (with some nice wood and nice plywood on it), and there's plenty of poop..... We did look in the outbuilding a few times, so she was hidden pretty well and the barn cat never bothered her (or caught her). So now she is back in the run, with like-minded chickens and dust bathing.

Baby chicks: They are 1 week old. We opened up the pop-door of the brooder to a sectioned off portion of the run, but we forgot to add some steps for the little ones to use to get out of the brooder. So, today we put in "steps" for the chicks and will go out to see if they have ventured into the fenced off area with momma hen's guidance. We are down to 7 chicks because one must have had some internal issues. It was noticeably smaller than the others at 5 days old (whereas at hatch it was pretty much the same size as the others), it was having some lethargy at about day 3-5 and died on day 5/6. But momma hen is happy with her chicks, and the rest seem to be growing well.

I took off more leaves from the tomato plants today. They say you can plant closer together in raised beds, so I did. But the tomato red are a jungle! I’m removing leaf stems even more aggressively than usual. They are all growing into each other. But the cherry tomatoes are ripening (we’ve eaten a few) and the Roma are green and growing.

Eating kale, lettuce, cukes, zukes, and “micro” greens. Oh, and peas!

The GOOD news is that she was in our outbuilding the whole time, roosting on spouse's wood rack (with some nice wood and nice plywood on it), and there's plenty of poop.....

Glad you found your hen. :thumbsup And those lil gumdrops on the wood,,,, consider them giving the wood some character:wee

A question about your potatoes,,,,, did they look like new potatoes, such as pix.

I don't know if we have mink around here. It looks like it could do some damage!

@cavemanrich those Zinnias are so pretty! My Dalia's aren't doing very good for some reason and I don't know why. I have some in the ground and some in pots and they all look about the same - super small. I've never had any trouble growing them before. 1/2 were bulbs I overwintered and some were new from the Dahlia Barn. :idunno
