What did you do in the garden today?

Wind and rain today. But, depending on the weather site, depends on how much rain we are expecting! Hoping it ends up on the low side. The band of storms should arrive around 10am. We are seeing all the rest of the areas we need to address for water flow. The work we did last fall has helped a lot, and each of the areas left will be smaller projects.

Still sick, but could be worse. Will see a doctor if not improved in a few days. I try to let an illness run its course before seeking out prescriptions, and cold viruses just have to run their course. But, if it turns into an infection, then gotta go to the doc.

Good morning gardeners. So sorry you are sick @Acre4Me, it could be the flu. Even though you get a flu shot you can still get the flu. It's just a less severe illness. Hope you get better soon. My go to is "hot and sour" soup. And you can have it delivered. We're getting some serious melting here. The sump pump comes on every so often and there's mud developing in the yard. I will be taking care of Suzy Q today. Yesterday was too windy to be outside for any length of time, but today is a bit calmer. The rain that is inundating the Midwest right now is supposed to arrive here tonight and tomorrow morning so it's only going to get muddier for the next few days until the temperatures drop. I'll be taking advantage of the warmer temps to give the pellet stove a good cleaning. As far as gardening, I need to count up all the re-usable containers I have and do some measuring of how many of these little pots I can cram into the sunroom. Then I can determine how many of what I want to start inside. Hope this storm is uneventful for you all. Have a great day.

You must feel like I do Karen enough is enough rain go away stay away I would even take snow over rain

Hey, you don’t have to shovel rain. LOL! But in all seriousness, there’s some nasty weather moving across the Midwest now. Hope you all keep safe.

I have not had to shovel allot of snow in 15 years

Our sump pump has been coming on frequently and our dog doesn't like it! She barks at it like there is a creature living in there! :lau
The first year I thought maybe there was a mouse or something in there, but then I noticed that she only barked at it when it turned on and she was outside.

They moved the arrival of snow up. Now it is supposed to start around 1PM and go until 7PM. Last night they only had us down for 2 or 3 hours of snow fall.
Still looks very dreary here and there are rivulets of water streaming through the chicken yards ( even though it isn't currently raining!).
@penny1960 the last storm ( in December) it took me 3 and a half hours to shovel our "driveway" and that was with me shoveling about 1/4 to 1/3 of it the night before so there wasn't as thick of snow on that part of it!!
I always just tell myself that I am getting a good work out as we only have a manual snow shovel. :gig
Last night they were talking about a dusting of snow ( about 1/4 inch) for us, so we'll see what we end up with. This morning it says 1.8 inches of precipitation but I'm not sure how much of that is supposed to be rain. :idunno
@Wee Farmer Sarah I am SOOOO happy we don't have to shovel rain!!!! :lau:lau
I hope everyone stays warm and safe! Happy Saturday!!:wee

Do most of you start your tomatoes from seed or buy already started plants?

I start my own tomatoes from seed and sometimes buy plants if needed . I mostly grow ones not available as plants . I also save seed .
How do you get them to not be too spindly? I've tried placing the grow light just above the soil and barely moving it up as they grow but they seem to grow like crazy and get spindly.

Good afternoon gardeners!
Yesterday after DH's retirement send off, my gardening consisted of picking another tomato (2 of only 5), a light watering of the garden and heavy cleaning of the coops. The last 2 years I scraped my poop boards faithfully everyday! The last 4 months has been more like every other day... then every 3 or 4... this time it was over a week . I used a hoe :D and it felt good to give my compost a big boost of poop as oppose to lots of small doses. They say small doses are better but this big dose was awesome.
Second barrel is cooking away. Surprised because I have been ignoring it and just turned it for the second time 2 days ago... must have been a perfect mix cuz I think it has only another 2 weeks to go. 20200111_154137.jpg 20200111_154144.jpg

Our temps made it down to 76 during the day and 73 at night. Still kicking off our light blankets but at least we have a light blanket. We have a upper level disturbance giving us blustery trades and rain w/ localized flooding. Then a cold front from the North bringing more moisture our way in a few days. Sorry kids but I am loving it! Rain here is the best!

Took truck back into the painters this morning. Painter had failed to re-hook up my radio/CD and dome light along with a small assortment of other missed details. After letting him have it for almost 2 months I was not thrilled about dropping it off again. But, I know he should be given the opportunity to fix things. I hope to pick it up this eve or maybe Sunday.

DH is in great spirits. I think this is going to be good and fun. He is like a little kid and already playing around the yard. The work party was very well done with good food, great music and heartfelt send offs that brought tears to my eyes. Nothing like seeing the young, up and comings, shake his hand, look him in the eye and say mahalo and you will be missed. He was awarded a signed and framed photo (of something I have not seen yet and he forgot at work... x-work) and a beautiful Koa wood paddle that reminds me of my old Hawaiian paddle I used for races when I was a young girl. I am looking forward to mounting it on our wall and draping it with the leis he received.
While feeding the horses yestermorn and b4 heading out, there was a beautiful double rainbow- rain is considered a blessing here. The Mana range was beautiful and a picture perfect backdrop to the party(sorry, not allowed to take photos). I couldn't be prouder.
