What did you do in the garden today?

Morning. Smells like snow out there!

I got the chickens a flock block yesterday, I think they're enjoying it but aren't obsessed.

I forgot to water my lime tree & its mad so it dropped all it's leaves, lol. It can't wait for spring!

Have a great day all & I LOVE all the pics. Especially horses! :love

Oh, I wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on my choice of chicks for spring - I've decided on Buff Orpingtons & Golden Laced Wyandottes.

I want layers that can handle the cold/snow & something that has a chance of going broody & will be able to be integrated with my red sex links eventually.

Opinions?

we are getting a few buff orps this spring, so no experience yet. We have 1 GLW male (gave the other GLW male to neighbor), and 2 GLW females. They are 9 months old. The girls mesh well with the flock and lay eggs fine. The males (ours and the neighbors) are so far good males -flock leaders and no human aggression. The GLW have not gone broody, but a bit young yet, and spring has not hit. We have one SLW hen that is nearly 2 yo. She has never gone broody. She has a fair bit of flock sass and is fairly high in the pecking order, but is not mean or a bully.

I shoveled a path in the snow for the chickens, however, prefer to stay under the cover of the run. Hauled fresh water out to the coop. Tried to re-level the sand and bricks the heater base sits on, all the water was leaking out of the waterer because they dug the sand out looking for "who knows what"!

Good morning gardeners. I've been out in the garden today. Planted the lavender, moved a few succulents that were getting too much sun and harvested peas. The chickens enjoyed the plants and I gave them some mustard greens too. I'm pretty sure I'll be moving the artichoke to the back of the gatden when it goes dormant this year. Hubs is coming out to help me move gravity feeders to the mini coop. I'm downsizing my flock and the mini coop will make a good place to keep feed dry and water shaded. Then I'll start painting. Here's a few pics from the garden today

That’s beautiful! I’m trying to remember what sun warmed dirt feels like!

That's so pretty and it looks really warm. (As I sit in front of my blazing pellet stove with the high temperature today climbing to a balmy 22F) Thank you @igorsMistress. Very nice reminder that my snow globe living isn't permanent. The flakes are scheduled to start flying around 4 PM EST. I've been thawing the chickens' waterers out every 2 1/2 hours. Their food, scratch, OS and pine shavings are fully stocked in the chicken coop so no dragging anything but water through the snow. These past 2 winters I feel I have been quite fortunate because it really isn't all that uncommon to get a 3 foot snowfall especially between February and March around here. So 6 inches is a piece of cake. As for the types of chickens you mentioned @Sueby: no experience at all with them. I have RIR's and BR's. Cold hardy and good layers. My largest RIR hen is actually laying an egg every couple of days. And I have to say she is quite the robust beauty with her new feathers. I'm not certain if my BR's are prone to broodiness or not. I catch them sitting in the nest box occasionally keeping the eggs warm, however they could be hiding from the rooster. I'm sure that wasn't helpful at all. Sorry. Have a great day everyone, I'll be back in the morning after shoveling duties.:)

Morning gardeners. :D
Loved your photos @Acre4Me . Your girls and boys are LOVELY (and helpful!) and your boxes look awesome! Your hard work will soon be paying off! Lovely you can get such big dimensional untreated lumber- we can only get untreated 2x4's or clear pine but the lengths are maybe 6 or 8 foot, I moved on after seeing the price tag plus it is only 1x and that wont last long here. Any who...

Our temps FINALLY dropped a few degrees last eve. Phone app said it was 64 @ 4:am!! and coconut oil is slightly solidified :ya
I worked in the coop and run for a bit last eve and this morning leveling the moonscape craters and moving perches. Going to head to pasture now and help DH replace the posts that have rotted with the two Kiawe we cut from the back wild area last eve. I'll load two rubbish cans with mulch for the girls run maybe some horse poo compost too.

I have been having a real hankering for roosters lately. Nice handsome roosters to keep watch for the girls and make babies for me. We don't have a big pool of nice unwanted roos like many rural places on the mainland. Most all people do not bother with egg layers here and we have so many wild/feral that they are a nuisance. My girls do have 2 steady boyfriends who keep and eye but they are far from pure and look over several random flocks. Seeing Acre4Me's handsome boys really has me thinking hard now... do you think my DH will notice if I sneak a few in... probably not right?!

I will pick up the Hurculiner that just came in this morning and hope to paint my truck bed ASAP. My new headset should come in by Monday too. I used Crutchfield so it should be super easy to install. I plan to order some replacement emblems and then my truck OCD/twitch should be good to go. I'll post a finished photo then- hopefully soon.
Have an awesome day all!!!!
