What did you do in the garden today?

I was giving some good thoughts to asparagus but then I red on the package it takes a couple of years before you get a decent harvest. I'm now more on the fence plus my wife said she don't eat it occasionally. The strawberries I planted last year gave a fair amount of fruit but it was on the smaller side. The plants don't look quite so great right now. I'm debating on what to do and perhaps starting over. I think it will be better to wait a couple more weeks before making the decision though.

Good luck with the bagged manure idea! I wish I could find small amounts locally without it being at the box store or mass produced where you don't truly know what you are getting!

Yes, it takes 3 years but it will continue to produce forever I think so it wouldn’t hurt to start now. I need to get started on mine but may just try next year because I’m swamped with tons of things to do this year.

Also wanted to clarify... you can keep them together at least until they’re 5+ inches or more... their roots are actually pretty woody and easily separated/moved. To ease your mind, most nurseries knock the dirt off their woody stock and ship them bare root (in damp, shredded newspaper.) What I usually do, is designate a small patch in my garden as a nursery... they can be planted as far apart as you have room for... so close if needed and separated later. What’s good about this is the soil temp is better regulated (dark pots get hot) and you don’t have to worry as much about over or under watering. They’re fairly resilient 🌱

Thanks! That’s awesome news. I was just scared their roots would get tangled and broken off if I tried separating them, but I have a bit more hope and confidence to leave em be for a little while longer. Let me go measure them to see how much longer I have.

You could even replant them now if you want... just scoop them out with a chunk of dirt around them.... they’ll be happier in the ground. They really are little resilient beings ☺️

Winds are howling here as well. I'll be heading downtown to the flower show in about 35 minutes or so. Boat show is running this weekend out in the suburbs and I'm fighting the temptation of dropping by. I need to renew my sea tow membership anyhow for the boat we purchased at the show 2 years ago. I'd love to upgrade to something larger but right now is not the best time.
