What did you do in the garden today?

Freeze warning last night, so the strawberries got covered up. Tonight there will be another freeze warning, with temps possibly as low as the upper 20s.

Did not actually do anything in the garden yesterday. But the kid and I constructed a feeder for the cockerel’s pen. I called three feed stores, and they were all out of hanging feeders (except very large ones). So, a square cornstarch container with a plastic lunch meat container have created the feeder and tray, a few bits of wood for stability, and old shoelace for hanging from a hook.

sorry about your sewing machine @WthrLady! I recently purchased a computerized machine (my first), but also have a high speed, straight stitch only machine. For the masks I went to the straight stitch machine bc it has more power to deal with the overlapping pleats and to do it fast. I hope you can get it fixed. The local shop here is still taking machines for repairs, you leave it at their door with a tag and form filled out, after calling ahead.
Pics of the feeder please?

Just tending to all my little seedlings I started at the end of February
Out our old house I built a cabinet greenhouse the size of a small armoire. I cut the planks for pallets into sections about 12" long and used them for the shelves. It was really nice actually, but didn't make the move. Here's a photo I took before I added doors and vinyl: View attachment 2082578
thats awesome!!!! Nice job!!!!

I am trying my hand at starting seeds inside this year. So far I have Teddy Bear Sunflowers, Roma Tomatoes, Summer Squash and Pole beans sprouting. Anyone have tips? They are in egg cartons (I have plenty of those laying around) in potting soil
Keep light on them or put them in a bright window. Otherwise they'll get leggy like my zucchini :(
Potting soil is not ideal, but will probably work. It tends to drain too much just. Also, the egg cartons are a nice idea and if they are the cardboard type you can cut them into individual cells and pop right into the ground. They are shallow though, so most starts will not be able to stay in them very long. Probably just two weeks.

Hens were going bat crap crazy forever this morning, so I checked in on webcam and saw that one was belly up under the perch. The queen of the coop was dead. Long live the queen. She was 3. Who knows. She was acting totally normal, just dropped dead and off the perch. BEST I can figure is that she sleeps next to the window, which is 5 feet off the ground. But the fox came by last night. If she saw that out the window, maybe she had a little heart attack. Who knows.

Going to get a new machine today. Argh grump grump grump.

Seeds must get started today or tomorrow.

Daylilies will go in the ground tomorrow.

Record high of 87 two days ago. Record low set this morning of 17. LOVE April!

Oh Jeez, heres my list:

  • Maintaining my three 4X8 raised beds=weeding, adding fresh dirt and compost
  • Tilling out a 6X8' in ground area then adding some compost and fresh dirt
  • Cleaned out 3 huge 25 gallon grow bags-will plant cukes in it
  • Made some trellis' for above
  • Already staked and cleaned up my small 4-plant blackberry patch
  • Pruned back my 2 pear trees and de-weeded and mulched the base of these as the chickens exposed some of the roots, also put up some small cages to prevent them form doing this
  • Ordered 5 rose bushes, 2 honeysuckle and 2 baptistas, they will go mostly in the front yard. Want to encourage bees to come by
Yay!

I dont have anything that old but I have a 1982 kenmore that i rely on and a 2000 singer thats fairly new I'm iffy on. My parts are on backorder so I can't work with her yet. If my kenmore crapped out I would be devastated
I used to refurbish antique treadles and up to 1950 machines. Sold them all for this computerized one. I live the solid steady straight stitch of any good machine.
