I like bread and butter pickles . Do you use pickle crisp when canning pickles ? Give it a try . We discovered it a few years ago .

I’ve never tried that one but I did get something similar last year. It is seasoning for different flavors (like bread and butter, dill, etc.) and is supposed to have crisper stuff in it.

It’s getting pretty crazy here. We just almost lost power a bit ago. Lights flickered a couple times. Very very windy. All my birds are hiding inside atm. I wish I had another surge protector for the heat mat thermostat for the plants though but I’ll just have to and I guess garden work is on hold for now

Aloha garden gang!

DH and I are still bagging and selling horse poop, made our next few months feed bill. Grateful for all the help from the pasture flock scratching out bugs and basically turning the poop for us and earning their scratch treats for sure .
I filled a rubbish barrel with mulch and grubs for my girls. Been incorporating the young ones into the flock this last week. Plan to continue with coop/run housekeeping and improvements today.
We did not get enough rain with last low/front so will be watering garden and yard as we start on our drying trend.
Mosquitoes are RELENTLESS!!!!

Hawaii C19 # numbers are low and our county is under 25 (so far, today...) but on Friday we had our first Covid case a block away . The young person was found unconscious at the playground. Super bad news is it was communicable, not isolated. Grateful DH, AJ and I have been very good with our "stay at home order", other than hanging with horses at pasture, riding and shoveling... Our Mayor has shined during this time, he has earned my respect and vote but would be nice if our governor would jump on board...
Was a little disturbed to see a friend post a photo of a family get together for Easter. Her son has bad asthma and her state has fairly high #'s compared to ours for sure. Hope she does not regret it.

Random lettuce plantings did not come up. Must replant.
Got gifted some Olena/tumeric the other day. Will plant and use- darn chickens dug up my last several plants...

I've never heard of Pickle Crisp. I'm sure I've seen it though. After googling I realized there's a Ball version. I always see Ball canning additives but the only one I ever look to buy is pectin though, which is always overpriced IMO. It looks like Pickle Crisp is just a food grade Calcium Chloride salt that is a better option than alum or lime (I never use those either though...). I may have to try this on a batch of pickles this year. I love them crisp. I usually go for younger cucumbers to get crisper pickles. Maybe I can get huge pickles that are crisp now. I'll need a huge jar though - maybe a 5 gallon bucket!

Is there any chance you need to dig and divide artichokes in the near term, or are they not your thing? They do grow great here but I can never get those seeds to germinate.

They are not my thing and I don't know anyone in my area who does grow them. I did plant one time because my brother said that they grow in low desert Ca, but they struggled for a year till my chickens took them out.
I think @igorsMistress is growing in Az?? Somebody posted some beauties... must have been her and her climate... Lets see who responds

No, my friend sent me and i thought it appropriate for this garden gang even if it was late... Super cute and clever... my chicks are not that cute (shhhh!!) and my floors are NOT that clean... and I am NOT that clever...
