This one is gun shy, but otherwise her nose is dead on. She's turning out to be a great field dog otherwise.
She shoved her whole head down a badger hole the other day. That could have been disasterous. She'll even chase voles in the thatch.

Baby fawns don't have much for scent, it is part of their camouflage. That is why it lays there and doesn't move until forced too.

We worked with our Irish setter to learn to use his nose. He could smell really well but we had to train him to use it to track and locate the birds.

Good afternoon gardeners. I’m depressed. I heard a commotion today outside, I could tell it wasn’t good but I was on the phone (work) and couldn’t just drop what I was doing. I went out as soon as I could and found my Nn cockerel dead in the yard and no one else was around. I couldn’t take much time to look around, but found the rest of the crew after work today. All alive thankfully but it saddens me that I lost that cockerel. I doubt it was a cat, definitely not a dog as I have a six foot wall and it’s about impossible to dig in. It looked more like a raptor or owl though and not a dog, the feathers weren’t wet and slobbery and his flesh wasn’t bitten like a dog would do. The body was left behind so I’m guessing it was a young hawk as the owls that come around are definitely big enough to carry him off and I think it’s still a bit early for the pair that raise their babies here in winter. I know it’s too early for owlets but the owls don’t usually show up until November. So now I guess I’ll be keeping the AC cockerel and we’ll see what happens. See y’all later, have a good night.

Sorry you lost your cockerel.
Was it eaten or plucked at all? When the hawk nailed the guinea hen just outside the chicken run, it sat there and ate it right where it was until my DH chased it off.

Alll his female offspring will have black skin and flesh, all his male offspring will have the mothers skin and flesh color.... that's if you breed him. Sorry about the lose of that name neck, he was a very good looking cockerel

I am too tired to make a full post on the winter garden (greenhouse) project, I could barely muster up the energy to think straight enough to find this one picture, I finally put plants in the green house. with 3 walls up during the afternoon the greenhouse was 12 degrees warmer (probe not in direct sunlight) than the temperature outside of the greenhouse in the shade. I put my hacked up pruned pepper plants in the greenhouse just to get them out of the my way. The benches I am putting in will be made with old crappy scrap wood, I know I will be changing that up a lot before I figure out exactly how to organize the greenhouse and then I will get quality lumber.

Well, today I weeded the flower bed along the side of the house- my hollyhocks did not make it, but the hydrangea has been glorious. I put cap stones on the cinderblock beds in the back. they look better. I still have one watermelon that I am waiting to pick. When I clean out the chicken coop, I put the poop in a container and then in the garden at the end of the year. I dug a trench in the middle of one the garden and dumped the manure in and closed it up. Will turn it every few weeks til spring. I discovered my Carolina Jasmine has been hiding in the weeds. Finally got that thing weeded out and it is growing up the trellis and up the side of the house. Can't wait til spring. It is right outside my bedroom window.
My dog got happy about digging up my dwarf fig tree roots- I had to put dirt there- with some rocks and dog poop. Grrr. There are so many holes in the yard from her digging- I think she is chasing voles. I have run out of garden soil bags and need to get more. She digs wide trenches, so it is hard to mow over. While weeding the garden, I was accosted by a whole million little white flying things- look like white midges- kept flying in a group like gnats. What are those? I need to spray something on the plant to kill them.
On my house plants, I cut back my prayer plant a few weeks ago and put the cuttings in water. Now, I need to get some potting soil and plant those things in pots- my friends are gonna love their Christmas present- lol. The summer poinsetta along the patio has been shedding seeds like crazy. I may gather some and gift as well.
The baby chicks in the brooder will be ready to come out next week. Gosh they have grown fast. I weed wacked and cut branches around the "baby barn" in the chicken yard and cleaned it out. Next week I can put the fresh pine chips in. They are sooo cute. Well, time to do laundry...
