What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning all. Only thing happening here is snow and bitter cold air moving in. We got about 5 inches of snow yesterday. Got the walkways and driveway cleared. We get flurries and snow showers that keep up the "snow globe" look. I really like the snow. It's pretty and adds nitrogen to the soil. The snowblower is running just fine. I want to get a bit more shoveling done today before the temps drop to 3F overnight tonight. I've got just about all my seeds now and enough stuff for starting seeds in mid-March. I'm making some headway on peeling the wallpaper off the livingroom walls. Only one short wall and the long one behind the sofa to go. So I can finally paint it next week. I've decided on getting another electric range instead of gas and having the kitchen floor re-done between removal and installation. I really don't like the glass top at all. The conventional electric ranges are easier to repair and I can get a special burner for using the canner for a lot less than the cost of running the gas line to the house. I've finally come up with a plan to finish off the kitchen remodel so it's just a matter of waiting for supplies to become available to finish it off. Hopefully before Spring planting time.

Of course they complained they wanted more! My dogs sit under my desk with their heads sticking out right next to the cookie jar and wait. If I don’t pay attention to them then I get nudges and pleading eyes. I’m such a sucker!

thanks, I’m happy all the duckies made it alive. I thought for sure they’d end up being delayed and it’s good they weren’t.

Those baby duckies are so cute! :love

Good morning gardeners. Gave the ducks their big pool so I can test run drainage before we anything semi permanent. Walked through the garden today. As you can see I have a healthy crop of weeds. I need to cut them back and feed to the bunnies and ducks. No veg garden pics but there are carrots galore in there. I didn’t want to attract the ducks over there and have to chase them out. Gotta get that fenced off! Have a great day everyone.

This is basically what I did in the garden this week since I haven’t found time to sit down and write it all out. Raked pine straw and finished mulching the blueberry bed. Bought the last of seeds for the garden. Carved a new handle for the rake. Replaced the wheels on wheel barrow with no flats. Placed the posts for the fence for the 4x9 spring garden. Started asparagus seed indoors and picked up about 250 seed starting pots which need to be washed and sterilized later this week. :th

I haven’t seen anyone mention the cicada infestation this year. This will be the third one I’ve been on this earth for. The first one I’ve had a reason to care. What netting am I supposed to use to cover the fruit trees?
Oh, no... this is the year I'm going to get peaches for the first time from our tree. Will they damage the fruit?

Finally a nice enough day when I had my cell phone handy to take a picture of the compost pile... Not sure if you can tell how dark and rich this is breaking down. I'm so excited....

I see some spiky seed pods there. If the pile isn't cooking well, and those pods get mixed in they'll be spread all over when you spread the compost. I hot pile will kill the seeds. The other iron is too remove the pods and hope the seeds haven't spilled into your compost. Lastly, you could turn spread it and leave it for 2-4 weeks before planting anything. This way the weeds will sprout and you can till, hoe or pull the weeds.

I don’t think it’s the year for your area. I know it kills the young branches, so the fruit will probably be fine. I’ve never had my fruit make it to harvest unscathed though, so if I can get a net to keep everything out, I’ll be happy. The wind keeps me from safely spraying often enough, and rain wash pesticides off.
