What did you do in the garden today?

Planted the parsley and Swiss chard today. I collected more sticks for the fence potted up the thyme. Watered the whole garden. Fertilized the pots the azaleas, camellias, blueberries and elderberries. Also moved some grocery store green onions into pots. And transplanted some Iris

I moved about 1.5 yds of dirt today. There was a 8'x4'x2' mound that used to be a raised bed. While I moved the frame, I never got to moving the dirt last year. This was the last of four beds I moved last year mind you. The dirt was used to top off other raised beds, which are also 2' tall. That meant shoveling dirt into the wheelbarrow and then shoveling it again out of the wheelbarrow into the beds.

I also got to Menards and purchased the majority of the lumber for the new swingset. There's an old unmanaged flower bed in the way though... I'll be moving more dirt soon.

As for weather, today was beautiful. A but windy though and getting very windy now with rains coming in tonight likely. The temp was was a warm 60+, which was perfect for getting out and doing some garden work.

temperature dropping here as well. I must clear up mess from knocking down old coops. unfortunately I have no room to put old pallets and other pieces of wood as I can use them for my wood stove. still thinking how to manage it. I plan to plant there things that need warmer weather so no rush.

all I did in my garden yesterday is I ate 2 strawberries!

I know they can be perennial. I've heard future harvest are often not as abundant. Not sure if that's true. There's the matter of having space to keep them though and then hoping you don't bring insects in with them... I'd rather just grow a bunch and can them as pickled peppers, salsa, giardiniera, etc. to enjoy throughout the rest of the year until I can grow them again.

My harvests have gone up on the same plants but that is due to my learning curve so hard to say. And yes ive fermented my own habenero and jalapeno hot sauces and they are out of this world.

I do hydroponics for peppers and tomatoes so no soil bugs at all. And when i bring them inside in october i remove every leaf and 75% of growth. I keep them cool at 50f in indoor hydroponics until now, increase temps and lights and wake them up. At outside transfer they will have almost ripe peppers to pick.

Hot peppers are slow compared to bells. People who do competition hot peppers start them the year before in july

I won’t have much going on in the garden today. Ill be going over to my grandparents house to dig up some daffodils. We each have several kinds the other doesn’t so we’re going to trade some bulbs this year when we divide them. My grandfather is dividing his today and I’ll divide mine in about a month. I dug the holes for them yesterday so I just have to plop them in and rake dirt in. I’ll be busy out of the house most of the day with vet appointments and grocery shopping and digging the bulbs.

Very interesting @Magnumchicken! I don't have the room for all that, but love that you've figured it out! I made a ton of hot sauce last year, DH is spoiled now & only likes mine. He says it has much more flavor than anything you can buy. I fermented some, I roasted & canned some - he didn't seem to have a preference.

Nothing going on in the garden today, but supposed to in the 60s before the bottom drops out.

@Elyrian1 I would love one last snow storm! Just because I know in March it won't last. I hear parts of Colorado are going to get absolutely hammered! Good luck, post pics!

Just about all the snow is gone. I bet the compost is thawed now too. We had some rain last night, but not a lot. It's supposed to get cold at night again for the next week. I'm glad, because it will keep stuff from sprouting too soon.

One side of my back is sore from trying to turn the not-quite-thawed compost yesterday. I did see a lot of little weeds starting. Now that I have chickens, I have a use for them, and therefore a reason to want to go harvest the little buggers.

Thanks for the pictures, @Artichoke Lover. Spring is a time of hope for me. Love seeing the flowers as plants come back to life.

Holy cow, my cukes have already sprouted, that's a day & half maybe? Tops. I didn't know that was possible! They are in the tray with the peppers on heat, I should have put them in the unheated tray. Oh well.

Same here @Sally PB i don’t think I realize how depressing the cold dreary weather is until spring begins to come. I don’t think the new year really begins for me until spring. More power to you and all the others that deal with such a long winter I don’t think I would handle it as well.
