What did you do in the garden today?

I got 10 more tomato cages at TSC yesterday. I took all they had of the bare metal ones at $1.99/each. I won't pay $5 each for the coated ones. Not when I need about 20-30 more!

5 weeks on habaneros!?! I better get going!

last year we searched for the heavy duty, 4 circle tomato cages.. took us a few trips, but got all we needed. We also bought the shorter 3 ring/regular ones we use for pepper plants.

I planted 5 different varieties of blueberries last year....all rabbiteye and southern highbush. I don't remember which ones I got, exactly, except the pink lemonade! I'm really excited about that one. They are all budding out right now. I should probably pull the buds, but it breaks my heart to do it.

About 3 years ago, I bought some pineberry plants from one of the gardening mags. I had them in small pots and most of them died. The two that remained never flourished at all. When I built my new strawberry tower last summer, I added them on a whim.... Now they are taking over! I'm amazed at how much they have proliferated.... I've seen several posts where people complained that they put off runners like crazy but no berries. I checked mine yesterday and there are at least 3-4 flowers already blooming on them. Now I just need to go pull out the bird netting to keep them safe. Still pondering what to do about potential slugs. I hate slugs.

I still have a TON of planting left to do. I have my tree seedlings from last fall (pomegranate, plum, apple, and lemon). Plus I bought 3 new trees this past weekend - Pink Lady apple tree, a french Plum, and a Belle of Georgia dwarf peach. Need to plant all of those.... On the vegetable side, I have red & yellow onions, squash, chives, scallions, runner beans, watermelon, lettuce, kohlrabi, and pumpkins to plant. I inquired at the nursery about my yacon plants. They are supposed to ship in early April some time.

I have always planned to use cattle panels for tomato cages because the Brandywines I grow get so big, but I've never gotten around to it. Nothing I could find sold as a tomato cage has come anywhere near supporting the Brandywines. But in the mean time I use two 8 foot tall green garden stakes per plant & it works.

Here's the video on how to make them if anyones interested:

Thanks for the video! I've been trying to plan out how to build my cages for this year since my netting finally bit the dust last summer.

I bought some cheap metal tomato cages last year for my Bradley tomatoes. They were worthless. Not doing that again.... I saw on a gardening channel where someone used T-posts and wire to create their own trellis for a row of tomatoes. That's what I'm going to try.... I planted at least 3 yellow Brandywine tomatoes. How tall do they get? Lol.... This is my first year with Brandywines.

We also have a large mulberry tree im planning to collect more from this year, gonna get a tarp spread it out and shake the tree as I heard it can be done that way! It always produces a ton but most are too high for me to reach and only a handful I can!

Also with my wild grapes they apparently never stopped growing back lmao, RIGHT under where my dad cut the vine they started growing back and I never noticed sneaky little buggers! Im happy they are growing back though as I enjoy the fruit from them and heard that chickens also like them!
I have large ancient mulberry trees. I used to do the sheets, but honestly the time it takes to pick through and get out all the leaves, stick, twigs, and bugs isn't worth my time. A bucket around my neck and two handed picking is VERY fast and clean. Just a thought.

1.72 inches of rain in he past 24 hours and it's going to keep on raining all day. The ground was still fully saturated from last weeks almost 8 inches of rain. All the field and french drains are pumping it downhill as fast as they can. I have a small trout stream through the pasture again, but as long as it's moving through, that's ok.

The tulip tree planted in August didn't make it through the winter, so that needs taken back and exchanged. I'll get another willow tree for the pasture.

I moved around some of the seedlings. The onions are going gangbusters. I'll stop at goodwill and see if I can get some cookie sheets to use as watering trays for smaller pots. I have plenty of empty seed flats, but they aren't sturdy enough to use without the cells that go in them.

Well

This is why I gave up on cages and just put up one long piece of cattle panel per row and tie to that. Then I can prune and SEE inside all the plants. I tie them up so they are grown to the panels almost like a grapevine.
