What did you do in the garden today?

Rained most of the day. But no thunderstorms as predicted.

Walked the garden during a lull. Nearly everything has sprouted.

Here are the lentil sprouts. The "French Green" are in the upper half, and "Black Beluga" are in the bottom half. Clearly good germination and I'll need to thin them out! Never grown lentils - so, new to me!

Here is the Compost bin. Bins are 6' x 4'.
Far left - new stuff beginning this past winter.
Middle bin: from last spring to late fall. It's looking pretty good! I just turned it a couple of days ago and applied "compost starter" microbes since it has warmed up for good. It is stuff from 2019.

Ah. 2019. With all that wood, I was thinking those bins look extravagant LOL. Very nice!

Mine are old rusty barrels.

She's a game hen but mated with the GLW rooster I butchered about 2 weeks ago. There's 6 babies
Nobody mentioned the dead mouse?

That just an afternoon snack for the chicks? 🤣

a single lego brick stepped on, in the dark, middle of the night
Even worse... jacks. Can you say, caltrop?

My mom had a rule if we played with jacks. We counted how many there were when we took them out. We had to count them as we put them back. And we had to put every single one back.

I thought about Jack’s earlier.

I hilled the second row of potatoes. It was actually the third row I planted, but the second row planted took longer to come up so it's behind a week or two.

I also finished draining the pond. I need to do the dirty job of climbing in and scooping out the stuff that collected in the bottom.

Bindweed - that is what I am battling! :he

I've been very diligent in keeping any and all of what-I-thought-was-morning-glory from producing any flowers for the last 2 years.

This spring I turned over the two worst beds multiple times and pulled out POUNDS of the root systems. They were collected into small boxes to contain them, then tossed into the burn bin.

Then, I looked up Morning Glory and Bind weed stats. Apparently, morning glory is an annual, but spreads its seeds very well, so it seems like a perrennial, but does not have the extensive root system of the bindweed - although they are in the same family/group of plants. There are a few other characteristics that are also indicative of bindweed - all of which this annoying plant has.

There are two ways to control:

1. Spray with herbicide (like Roundup). Obviously this is around my garden, so I'd need to be REALLY careful on a windless day. hmm... not sure I'll try this with garden in early growth stages.

2. Keep on it constantly to pull it out when it is only a few inches above ground to starve the roots. Might take up to 3 years to kill off all the bindweed. This is somewhat what I did this spring - turn over, remove roots (they are bright white), wait 2-3 weeks, turn over again - remove roots...this was done at least 4x already.

 Die weed, DIE!!
I feel your pain. My battle with Asian Jasmine is horrendous- but I am making headway. After the next rain( any day now) I can finish up removing the stuff from the side of the house and move to the front

I loved it and keep a set in the game box for visiting kids. The last time I took the jacks out and showed them, they did not have the hand eye coordination necessary to play- we are talking 10 and 12 yr old girls and an 8 yr old boy. I was shocked, but maybe this is the result of the electronic age
