What did you do in the garden today?

Hey all. I need to go catch up but it's been a few days so I'm soooo behind! It's hot & humid out there & this is just the beginning, this week is supposed to be icky. Joy. Garden is doing well, took some pics.

Picked some purple green beans, they are delish!

My 2 next projects, the fire hydrant the neighbor gave us (ugh) & an old engine - I need to get them cleaned & painted I guess. DH is going to make they hydrant into a spigot eventually. I just can't decide what color to paint either one, so they sit...

Ok, off to catch up, have a great day!
I say keep the fire hydrant red. The engine would look neat in John Deere green and yellow.

You are totally correct... 12x4. And I got a little attached to my seedlings! I was going to try the square foot approach but don't think that would have worked. I should try to prune while staking them today.
Just be sure to keep the growing tip on your main stem. I accidentally broke it off one plant and am not slowly letting a sucker become the primary stem.

I planted pansies that had been sitting in their plastic packs since early April.

LOL Where do you live 🥰? No one in Louisiana can grow pansies this time of year 🤣 Ours all look like they’ve been sprayed with weed killer now 🤦🏼‍♀️

I picked another small amount of green beans today. My plants are blooming but slow to produce. I'm starting to fear that the heavy rains we have been getting is giving me a lot of plant and poor production. Lots of blooms though and I am hoping that they will still give me a large picking or two in the future.

I also beat back the squash vines again that love the wet weather. I'll have to get a new picture of them. I have the feeling they are going to invade the timber. Should be interesting if that happens.

I finally wandered in for the day @Acre4Me it's a beneficial predatory wasp. He's a good guy, just ignore him.

Hot and HUMID up here again. The lack of wind makes it nauseating.

I've removed 12 apple trees from the orchard, capped the irrigation lines to the spots, and mowed the weeds. I can clearly see a streak of an area through the top of the orchard that is a stunted/dead zone for trees, at least fruit trees. Neighbor traded me an oak tree for some plantings so maybe I'll put that in. I have one part of the dead zone that has ONE tiny sapling left in it. I'll move that to a living zone area to open the dead zone for some landscaping tie beds for wildflowers/cutting flowers.

The whole thing is annoying, but you have to learn to live WITH the land and not fight it.

After all our rain the flies in the henhouse and stables are TERRIBLE, so I sprayed for those while I was out there.

Neighbor down the road is infested with grasshoppers on a biblical scales. It actually makes you jittery to walk around. There are millions of them, eating everything on her property.

Managed some curtains and a 10 foot rod to act as a wall in the sewing area.

Hope you're all having a great day.

I put some mulch around the onions that are among the tomatoes and around the butternut squash. I still have some compost to put around plants; I need to empty that spot so that I can turn the currently composting pile. Then it's the turn-every-other-day deal until it's done. I feel my arms firming up just thinking about it. :lau

Ok, this may be a somewhat ignorant question, but here goes.
Asparagus:
This is my first time growing it, I was given some 2nd year crowns to plant.
The planter is a HUGE fern bed, I am NOT harvesting any of them until possibly next year, I read a bit on it and want to make sure it's big and strong before I start snipping buds off. Besides, by the time I see them, in the planter I have, they are pretty tall already and probably too late :)

Anyways to my ignorance. They made HUGE big fluffy fronds. with kind of a main stemmish thing, with fronds coming out. I nipped the top off one, Ill attach a photo below. and the side stems nipped off but the main trunk, decided to take a nibble just for the heck of it o see. Wow, these things are actually pretty darned good !! It was pretty tender and had a bit of flavor to them too! I know what asparagus is/ looks like/ how to cook with it/ bla bla woof.... but have NOT been able really to find any info on picking or eating the fronds like that.

The frond in my picture is probably 2 or 3 feet all by now, and as you can see, I nipped the tip off.

Has anyone else ever eaten asparagus frond tips like this? If so, how did YOU like them? Have any recipes? I can't believe I am the ONLY one who ever tried this, yet there really is not a lot of info about other tardz like mee who tried this. I think these could really make a nice addition to a salad TBH.

Suggestions, comments, Ideas?

Thanks
Aaron
