What did you do in the garden today?

There is some truth in that for sure! I don't need to worry about my own fertilizer, but I certainly can't grow enough vegetables here to sustain us so I'm dependent on those with the seed! Sure do wish I could - would be fantastic to be self sufficient. Maybe when I retire. :gig (I say that about everything, lol)

Plus buying starts in the spring is soooo much easier than making my own. I did a little of that this past year & I hated it. Maybe when I retire. 🤭

most starts here got expensive with covid situation so it is not worth buying it. 1 broccoli start costs 0,45 - 0,5 eur and 1 kg of broccoli (about 2 lb) will drop to 1 eur (usually starts with 1,5).

Kept digging out dahlias and got a lot of high protein treats for chickens. I didn't know so many grubs (I believe they are from Japanese beetles) can hide inside the root systems of dahlias. Well, a happy day for chickens anyway. :D

when I buy bags with soil for planting that are imported from germany I find a lot of grubs inside. my chickens love them.

I got everything pulled out of the garden the other day and burned ( am hoping that will help control some of the bugs next year🤞). Thursday morning we had a hard freeze so my timing was good! Today I used more of the dirt/compost mix to top off the raised bed. Still need to add more to the in ground garden but want to dig for potatoes first.
Saturday morning I leave for Jamaica !!

I must admit that I'm a bit jealous! have a nice trip, enjoy it and take some photos and post them when you return.

You may also be able to use the ash from the burning to make soaps out of, depending on what all was burned with it. Either way good stuff there! Yes hope it helps with the bugs but Id not hold my breath, those darned things are a real pain to be rid of.

Agreed on the bugs... Beetles especially since they overwinter as larvae in the soil.

I look out into the yard and just see work that needs to be done... :th
We are not ready for winter, yet it's here. I have to work on the old car to sell it (tracing down brake leaks and need to change window actuator) and the new-to-me pickup (flush/change fluids and oil and replace a bad wheel speed sensor, and eventually get new tires and tire sensors plus alignment). How do I find time to get into the back yard and clean up the patio, put all the kids' outdoor toys away, clean out the shed, pull the last of the garden things, and finish winterizing garden beds,? Plus I STILL need to plant garlic and egyptian walking onions.
Feeling overwhelmed!
