What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. It’s raining here so nothing in the garden for me today. Merry Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas Eve gardeners. I'm enjoying a few snow flurries. The grass is almost covered, enough to brighten the landscape. I see on the weather map that @Sueby is getting a bit more of a coating. Enjoy. Nothing happening in the garden outside. I've been trying to coax my big poinsettia into blooming. Fingers crossed. My huge bowl of impatiens sends me a flower from time to time. The potted up lavender plants are enjoying the front porch and giving off a light scent of lavender perfume. And my rosemary plants are doing well and are still aromatic as well. The presents are all mostly wrapped. The chickens are getting a new toy this year, maybe two if they're lucky. On the subject of fireplaces: I had my chimney worked on right after I bought this house @Sally PB. It was $2300 to add another 2 feet of height to the chimney because it wasn't up to code. The chimney repairers also installed a chimney liner for the flue for the furnace then installed a chimney cap to keep the racoons from climbing in. For the amount of work I had done I think the cost was reasonable. I have three flues, one for each fireplace and one for the furnace. But at least they are usable now. That's an interesting "fireplace" you have there @cherrynberry. Is that a wood burner, pellet or electric stove? I imagine that wood burners are not allowed in California. As long as it keeps you warm is all that really matters. I put an electric log in the basement fireplace. I'm only down there for a short time and I use the "fireplace" when I'm doing an exercise video. If only Santa will bring me a dartboard I would spend more time down there. Ho! Ho! Ho! Got the mulch on the asparagus bed today, and manure spread on that and Momma's Ube bed. Stacked some mor bags of leavess around the trunks of 2 guava trees. Tropicals but keepin the trunk alive will let it come back after a freeze. Same with Papaya trees. I actually put 2" foam pipe insulation on the trunks for the winter. If we have a freeze they will come back from the trunks. been doin this with the guavas and papaya for years.

We’re between storms so I went to check the rain gauge. 1.5” so far I pulled a few weeds, dumped the duck waterers as they went to my sons today, and closed up the coops to keep the wild birds out. I was looking the yard over and the wood chips have done a fantastic job helping with water absorption. It’s also quite helpful with traction in the slippery stuff. We have a few areas that still puddle pretty good, but they’ve been wet a lot from the duck pools recently and most of the water has drained into the soil already.

We raked up some leaves that had blown into piles and hauled them up to the garden. They'll sit there till next April, and then I'll pile them on the garden.

I should have dug my sweet taters but was feeling cruddy so did absolutely NOTHING today. Now I feel guilty. I HAVE to get them in, tomorrow maybe. sigh...

Any reason you don’t put them on the garden now?
