What did you do in the garden today?

I got all the tomato plants into the dirt. Planted eggplant starts and 2 tomatillo starts. It got really hot so I broke for lunch. After lunch I set up 3 bamboo towers for pole beans. Sun beating down is pretty intense and no breeze. Way early for this kind of heat in New England. I picked more asparagus before it got too hot. I see that my radishes are coming up. I’m leaving the hose set up to water again in the morning. I’ll soak bean seeds tonight for planting in the morning.

Woohoo! I'm caught up baybee! :ya

LOL! Two weekends ago I was so proud of myself for getting so much done. Ever since then, rain, RAIN (rain) rain Rain rain and more rain. Plus wind and cold.
This exactly! I had a great start a few weeks ago but it's been mostly rainy and blowing now for weeks! Good thing I was behind in planting the greenhouse, nearly everything would be ready to go out and no place to safely good.
I've done that.... It's ridiculous how much money I've spent on dandelion seed but it never seems to grow.
That video that got posted says they are best started really early, that they don't germinate well in warmer weather.
I have finally tried rhubarb. Neighbor gave me a stalk. I cut it into half inch pieces, added about 1/4 cup water, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and simmered it until it was soft.
Rhubarb is so good. I found a recipe to make rhubarb upside down cake and it was delicious! Had an insane amount of sugar in it but I can live with that!
@Sally PB do you just give the chickens the weeds whole/long or do you cut? I heard (or read) somewhere that touch long weeds/grass can cause crop impaction. If I could just dump them in I would but I just compost.
I throw all weeds (except for wild blackberries) in the open run with the ladies, roots and all. They strip the leaves and generally destroy the roots. If it's tall grass I do chop that up a bit.
Do it! So easy, the most time consuming part is taking off the heads. Taste like spring honey. It is a favorite in our house on buttered toast with tea.
Got me too, now I have to find enough dandelion heads to make it work.
Hi all. It’s actually not bad outside today and the wind has died down. Not for long though, we hit 100+ by Friday and into the foreseeable future.
Could you send a little of that warm to us and we'll gladly share some of the cold and wet. We've had so much rain that I slog through standing water on my morning critter care. Sandy soil so it drains away just about as soon as the rain pauses.
So I ordered some dried dandelion flowers from Etsy. I'll supplement with what I can pick from the front lawn, but the dog has access to most of it in the back & I don't want to use that stuff.
Let us know if that works, I was thinking of stretching what flowers we have with the dry.
My chickens don't have access to the compost. Botulism scares me in canning too.
Dang it, I've been letting the ladies mix the top layer of our building compost bin. I think I have some left over pieces of horse panel I can set up there to keep them out. Too bad too, they do such a good job of mixing it all up.
My tomatoes sprouted, got about two inches tall and that's it. No progress, nor are they dying. Any ideas?
Probably not the case for yours, but mine poop out if I don't feed them enough. I use a weak (every watering use fertilizer) liquid fertilizer watered down to half strength and use it every watering.

Lots of sprouts in the greenhouse, including the pepperonchini seeds you sent me @TJAnonymous! Some are big enough to go outside but it's still too dang cold. And thanks for the warning @pennyJo1960, we've had a breakout case of bird flu about 2 hour drive from us. :he Hoping for the best.

We had a lovely baked french toast for lunch with a dollop of apple pie filling on top.

I would happily make that exchange! Hoping for the best for you too! I told hubs with the state of current affairs we can’t risk not having a run for the flock. We’re gonna be busy! So far no cases have been reported here, but better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. My flock only gets a few hours out of their coop each day right now.

Yay! My pepperoncinis far outpaced the tobasco peppers I started weeks ahead! I'm anxious to see how big they've grown in the week since I last saw them.

As for the dandelions, I'm going to try to transplant 3-4 plants when I get back. But it's good to know about the seeds. I ordered some penstemon seeds to replace the young plant I inadvertently killed. After ordering (cause I never see this stuff until afterwards), I came across an article which says these seeds need stratification and won't germinate unless they are given light with Temps around 60 degrees. So, similar to the dandelions... I could put them in the fridge for stratification but don't know how I'd manage to create the right temperature AND light environment needed for germination so I guess I'll just have to hold onto them until next spring... 🙁

So I’ve had a chance to read about botulism. It’s everywhere you guys. Even in an aerobic compost pile you’d have to turn it almost all the time to stop it. It lives in the soil, etc. I suspect giving the flock access to the pile on occasion so they can spread it out so it gets air and sun might actually be a good thing if you maintain your pile well and stir it.
