I hope you have a rear tine tiller. It does most of the work, and you control where it goes. If it's a front tine tiller, well, I'm sorry.

When I till, sometimes it ends up trying to push a big clump of dirt/weeds/leaves. I need to back up, kick the clump apart or to the side, then continue. Safety tip: Put tiller in reverse, back up, PUT TILLER IN NEUTRAL OR FORWARD before you go kick the dirt out of the way. I've never backed up over my feet, but I've had it back up "unexpectedly" because I left it in reverse. It's a DUH thing, but easy to do.

I’d leave one or two on the plants, purely for QC purposes-need to check size, color, and shape!! But overall, it is best to cut off all runners and most to all flowers first year. They establish more strongly bc energy going into roots.

Any experienced garlic growers: how does the garlic in the first pic look to you? And should I be thinning them at some point? Also, could a clove send up two stalks? I’m positive I tried to space out the cloves, but in a few spots there are stalks close together…might be that two cloves are close, but I don’t have any experience here.

I grow a hard neck variety and have been working on my strain for 5-6 yrs now. Im normally only cooking for 1-2 people so a huge clove is just too much for my normal dishes. I've been selecting for 6 or so cloves per bulb that are in the 1/2tsp size range. Not entirely certain which stain I started with maybe an indian red or mujic? But they are very sharp and potent, hence wanting smaller cloves.

Oh yeah- I just got done with the tiller for now. It was rough. But it worked well, but hard for me to handle. It is a large and heavy one. Definitely need shoes.

Conversely, 81 yo neighbor uses his front tone to till his in ground garden. He has back and knee issues too, so the Front tine works well for him. It is certainly smaller than ours.

I need a tiller for the beds. Obviously small. But it will help me. Currently need to fork the beds thoroughly, then break some clods by hand, then hoe it evenly. So, a bed tiller might be an asset. I have 11 raised beds I plant in, plus the two large beds.

Oy, even with an auger digging holes is hard work here. I needed to come in for something to eat and cool off, but the first plum tree has been planted. I put in a healthy dose of gypsum and worm castings, backfilled the hole around the root ball with raised bed and potting mix and topped with compost. I’m going to mulch each tree with straw when we’re done.

Have enough for 4-5 pints of jelly.

We lost our 8 year old Mo cat last night .. Today we will have his last place picked .. Mo was born feral he learned love and trust here. He will be missed.
