What did you do in the garden today?

with our savory jello conversation a few weeks ago.

The Eastern Cottontails here seem to get the babies (only one at a time!) to "self sufficient" stage and ignore them ever after. I've never seen a baby with a mom.
Wild rabbits get them to weaning stage normally 3-4 weeks then the kits are on their own. Because momma is having another litter at 4-5 weeks after the last one was born. Rinse and repeat.

It’s a process. Spring is fairly capricious and it’s always a challenge trying to put things into the ground and deal with the weather. Late freezes, lots of water or no water and heat.

What are you all growing this year?

Our apple and plum trees are starting to fruit, even though they have some problems. Plum has leaf curl due to aphids and the apple has some sort of bacterial or fungus issue. I missed an early spray but I hope I can keep on it with light sprays throughout the growing season.

Onions are taking hold after their transplant, squash are starting to take off, and the tomatoes seem to be doing ok too. The planter box has chamomile in it. Potatoes are coming up as well. Chickens are doing fine. More rain this weekend. Growing lots of fuel for July/august fires?

Might buy a crock pot this weekend to do venison roasts in. Also plant some super hot seeds that I’ve been unsuccessful growing for the past few years. Old photos from gardens past. One of those shots was my pepper bed; jalapeños and other “less” spicy varieties seem to grow better here with the shorter growing season. Still need to be started early. 👍 Unrelated.

All the best.

Edit: excuse the jacked up truck, and enjoy the neighborhood bear instead. Peppers under the lights were just left to go…LEGGY! Hehe
Awesome pics!

Got home from work around 4, and headed out to the garden to get some work in. Ended up out there til 7:45 and we decided on tuna sandwiches and frozen fries since it was so late. Even had DS help weeding for about an hour!

Planted 4 tomatoes and 4 peppers in pots, I bought them at the farm store on a whim…not sure why since I already grew a bunch. Lol. But they were outgrowing their packs so they needed to move. Removed the row of peas the bunny ate, except for the one that is 5 feet high and somehow was missed. I *think* I secured the perimeter well enough…we will soon find out. Pole beans and winter squash will take that space tomorrow. Weeded the tomato rows, planted the started herbs my aunt gave me (basil, thyme, oregano, parsley, sage, and rosemary…already have perennial chives & volunteer dill and cilantro all over.) Tied up and pruned the 36 tomato plants. Also transplanted a few sunflowers and zinnias. I’m very tired but feel accomplished! It was a nice cool night after yesterday’s rain, perfect working weather!

I bought this Galanga plant from Ebay. They sent me 3 small roots and it took a while to sprout and grow. Now that it is established, its rapidly multiplying.

I bought this plant to use with a Thai chicken soup recipe that I found on YouTube, and they don't sell it in my local super market. Although I had this plant for around 2 years, I have never tasted it. Now that I have the main ingredients growing in my yard to make the soup, I should make it to see if the Galanga makes a big difference in taste.

I probably am sick but I thought that was funny.
Oh it was def funny, in a sick sort of way! He got another one, he sat on top of my brand new bug netting on the hoop and ate it. So there is blood, fur & little pieces of meat all over & HOLES in my netting. So much for that netting. 🙄 I picked some strawberries this am & there is still at least one baby in there so I'm sure he'll be back.

The grandmonster's "salad box" and sweet yellow onions are popping!! I go out and plant in the gaps of the onions, so hopefully we can harvest several times. Sugar snaps are learning to climb. The storms beat a couple down, but I was able to reattach. I'm wondering why I didn't do raised beds years ago. My old bones are loving time in the garden now!!
