What did you do in the garden today?

Morning. I had not heard about the cattle - that's just awful. I haven't watched much news the last couple weeks, I just can't handle any more bad news (or political bs). I've had to step away from real life for a bit & look to the garden for peace. I'll let DH handle the bad stuff for a while. :gig

I noticed some buds on a few Dahlia plants. :yesss: I'm on my way out to hand pollinate now & hoping for rain tonight so I don't have to water. Onions are developing good bulbs & garlic is starting to brown some outer leaves so everything is well on it's way! I should be picking squash in a week or 2.

I got baby cucumbers coming in!!! I'm "trying" to grow them vertically and they definitely have a mind of their own lol.
So when I went to rein in a vine of em I saw it ....precious lil baby!!! Super excited for my first caprese salad!!!
Bees were extra hard at work in the squash so vertical is definitely helping there too!
We've had less than ½" rain all month...no end in sight. So frustrating. So miserable out there ya don't even wanna enjoy all the hard work from the garden and my feathery babies!
This too shall pass. Grandbabies headed my way now!

I'm having the same experience. I sprayed copper sulfate on the cukes since blight is still trying to take over. Yesterday even I noticed there were about 5 female flowers and only a couple males. I did my best to hand pollinate although they aren't covered so the bees can get to them.... This morning I went outside to water the garden and noticed the cukes now have 2-3 DOZEN flowers on them... 😂 I kid you not...its like there was a flower explosion!

They do now. There is actually a rebate for installing rain barrels
Makes sense to collect and store whatever falls on the roof in any part of So Cal I know of. The alternative is: whatever doesn't go into the ground runs off down the paved surfaces into storm drains then to the ocean. There is already plenty of water in the ocean ;)

Does anyone know what type of plant or tree this is?
Google says it is likely

Crotalaria pallida

Crotalaria pallida is found in Indonesia, Sudan, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Brazil.[2] India
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalaria_pallida)
so I hope you live in one of those places ;)

Is Google Lens an addon?
Not to my knowledge. I'm using Chrome and it seems to be a standard feature. To test I opened Google in Safari and brought up pictures. Did the same thing in Firefox. There is no Google Lens option in either so maybe it is only a feature on Chrome?

I am so sorry, that must have been awful. We lost our old min-pin to two racoons that were under our back porch. Racoons are not cute critters, they are nasty predators that should stay out in the woods.

That's terrible, we hadn't heard about it. What a nightmare.

Planted the last of the seedling tomatoes, cleared nearly the last of the compost out of the finished side of the bins, up potted more of the peppers, staked and strung the biggest tomato bed, tossed the tired tomato seedlings (so hard to do), and dumped a bunch of weed-choked pots in the chicken run.

Rant incoming:
This morning as we were just heading off on Penny's walk, the annoying constantly barking dogs that belong to our neighbor were barking but this time from our backyard. They have now added digging under our fence to their charms. We talked to the husband (the wife is nuts) and he apologized and said he'd fix the fence issue and promised that the barking would get better. They have been promising to fix the barking issue for 3 years with no improvement. I had done a temporary fix for the fence when we got home from our walk. The real problem is these folks have not the tiniest idea how to train a dog. When one of their dogs get out of the yard and then come back, they yell at the returning dog, shouting "BAD DOG" when the dog comes home. WTH??? That only teaches the dog to not come back. They think that all dogs are Lassie and know psychically what the human wants them to do and if they don't, then they just need to yell more. There are currently 4 dogs on their property and not one of them is a good neighbor. I pity the poor dogs, they aren't housebroken, they never hear a "good dog" only "bad dog", they NEVER go for a walk, they have a tiny yard and one is an Australian shepherd. Why do such people even have dogs? And they they say on Facebook how much they love their dogs? This isn't love! I just don't understand.
Next time it gets in the yard, it belong to the county pick up. If they have to start paying to get it back they'll either surrender it, or take care of the problem.

Spent an hour in the garden. Cooler, but humid as heck and the biting flies are relentless.
I tied up all the hoop house tomatoes and installed a greenhouse fan on the far end. I still need to paint the trim, but I'm waiting for caulking to dry, and I'm out of paint brushes. It has a thermostat on it that you can set when it kicks on.
I still need to tie up all the tomatoes in the outdoor garden and check for pruning needs.
The grapes are going gangbusters.
The blackberries are thin this year as I pruned them last year to reorganize.
I found shade cloth to install at hobby lobby. Posts for it are simple but one is a 4x4 that has to be concreted in. The others can be attached to the outer posts of the garden that are 3 feet down in concrete already. So I might dig that hole as well next trip out.
I replace the cord ties for the shade cloths with wire and turnbuckles so I can take them down for winter and tighten them. I'll add photos later when they load to google.

Me & Mrs. Lobo Went fishing yesterday so not much done in the garden except I planted a catfish in the garden. Gafftop catfish, a saltwater fish (which is where we fish, not much fresh here) Good to eat but not fun ti clean. Way more slimy thay freshwater cats and you can't get rid of ithe slime. Wash it off and it comes right back, even when they have been on ice for several hours. Wife wanted to keep it but didn't wanna clean it so it got planted along with the other carcasses.
Been working down a pile of wood chip mulch tryin to keep the garden alive. No rain to speak of since March, approaching 100F and I'm watering every day.
Gottaget a way to keep from having to water so much. Wife likes sprinklers but they put water where it is not needed. I have used the soaker hoses before but the ones from the box stores suck. Always seem to have too much flow one place and not enough at others. They have a tendency to break.
Found a Melnor brand in Lowes website, not stocked in our store. These are rubberized fabric so I'm taking a chance they will be different, more reliable, than Others. Will be @ the local store Thursday.
If this don't work I may spring for a drip system, maybe something from Hoss. Expensive but I hate to see my hard work dyin for lack of care.
