What did you do in the garden today?

have you checked for Squash Vine Borer? You will see the stem damaged, ofter with yellow crumbly stuff coming out of the stem - usually near/ on the main stem near the main roots (so, just above ground level). If you slice into the stem, you will find a largish white caterpillar. But, a heavy squash bug infestation can also cause problems. Any aphids or mites present?

If none of these, maybe it needs fertilizer. Squash are heavy feeders. Could be high temps as well.
I check daily for the bugs. Temps might be it. It's been a rough summer. Drought and high temps. Thanks. I'll be grateful for the one I did get.

What do you mean by layering the vine?
Layering is putting the vine on the ground and holding it down with dirt or a rock . It will root . Cut it free of the vine after it is well rooted . There is also air layering ( marcotting ) where you put potting mix around the stem and hold it in place with something like plastic wrap or bottle .https://youtu.be/nf6FnQHoevI

They're actually not a lot of work to process. You just pick some from the tree, let them dry or use a dehydrator, then run them through a coffee grinder or take them to this local place that will mill them for you. My youngest daughter is the one that collects and processes them every year. She makes about a gallon size bag of the flour. It takes her maybe an hour to collect the pods and an hour or two to grind them. She's my turtle kid...so I'm guessing it would take most people about half that time😂
I’ll have to try it next year I suppose!

Here is today's harvest. I'm pretty sure all my romaine lettuce has or at least is beginning to bolt. I also found another ripe-looking cucumber which is awesome! Also harvested my first zucchini- it tasted pretty good!

How do you fix the flowers? Dipped and fried or...?

Good afternoon gardeners. My the chickens have had a grand time in the backyard these last few days. Piles? What piles? Everything is everywhere! Fortunately they don’t have access to the shade garden. I see lots of new growth on one of the apricot trees but the other looks rough still. I’m going to fertilize everything in the morning before our rain chances increase and wait to water over the weekend. The grass needs a soak too. The sugarcane is still growing like crazy and the lemongrass is taking off. Tonight I’ll spray all the things in the shade garden with some neem. I’m planning what I’m going to do in my office once the kids relocate, can’t wait! Going to paint and I got some cute curtains and a pretty rug to go in there. Going to paint an old bookshelf and decoupage on some floral napkins to girly it up. Hubs is resistant to flowers on the bedsheets or in the bathroom so when he visits my office he’ll be firmly in girl territory.

I’ve read that they’re delicious stuffed with cream cheese, haven’t tried them that way though. I’ve added to salads though.

Sugarcane! How exciting! I'm trying sorghum for the first time this year...it's supposed to be pretty sweet...but sugarcane sounds even better ❤️
