What did you do in the garden today?

Yes! I just ordered some purple ones.

In fact I just ordered a whole bunch of stuff for next year as my notes were getting too long. :gig Trying the asparagus beans, edamame & the Tromboncino squash - all for the first time next year.

eta: & some new types of rutabaga & turnips too.

I've always been a bit of a seed "collector" (hoarder) but this year with grocery prices being so high and seeds selling out more quickly it has basically opened the flood gates for me giving myself permission to buy as many seeds as I please.

Got a pretty big harvest today... lots of tomatoes. I had two carrots and a strawberry, but I ate them already . Planning on making a little salad with the tomatoes- I also harvested some basil, so I'll use that. I find that the basil I planted from seed is much healthier than the store-bought basil plants, but that could be just the location that I'm growing them in. I've got a couple of fairly large zucchinis coming in. It's my first time growing them and cucumbers, so I'm really happy with how they're growing so far!

Also, for my first attempt for a fall garden, I'm growing broccoli (I'm also planning to grow peas and stuff, but I ran out of potting soil), and it germinated today! One of the roots has a bit of mold or something on it, but other than that I think they're healthy.

Oh! And I was watching a video about canning, and am pretty sure they gave me the answer to what happened to my peaches. It turns out, if you don't let the jars cool in the canner with the lid off for at least 5 minutes before taking them out, the pressure change can cause the liquid to bubble out, which can cause failure to seal. Since they sealed, they should be fine, but next time, I know to let them sit a little longer off the heat.

What recipe did you use for watermelon jelly? I tried it once and it came out tasting like tomatoes. Somehow. Think I scirched it a little.
Too bad you aren't closer. I've had the biggest harvest of watermelons to date! More than enough to share. It was my first year growing Black Diamond watermelon and Congo watermelon and they were both very productive, especially the black diamond though. We also made watermelon jelly and it's really good! So far it's my favorite way to preserve watermelon. I think I'll try making some watermelon fruit roll up as well but I don't think that will last quite as long as far as shelf stability.

My Atlantic Giant Pumpkin plants have at least 5 decently sized pumpkins on them, so there's that, at least. I am really unsure of how I am going to preserve them... I definitely don't have enough jars for everything I want to do....

First average frost is the week of September 21.

I canned peaches yesterday, but I've never done it before, and I am concerned I did it wrong.... they sealed, but the peaches rose above the liquid... do I need to eat them sooner than anticipated? (In hindsight, I should have used all clear or all green jars)

No worries, anytime you can anything it usually floats to the top. No need to worry, they're good as long as you followed proper canning methods & they sealed. It annoys me when my dilly beans float to the top because it looks funny! But it's what happens.
