My husband is probably REALLY thankful that we don't live within driving distance to any hatcheries...... I really don't know how you resist this cuteness......

Ah, well….it was almost 6 hours round trip, left at 6am to get there so we could be home around noon. But if I lived close to them, yes it would be really hard to resist the cheap chick bin! FWIW there is a house (with some land and I think outbuildings) for sale, just down the road from them…..

Next year, I will not be planting butternut squash. For the first time in a long time. Last year, zero squash. This year, one or two, if I'm lucky and the critters don't get them. Two years ago, I had about 60. I recall getting about 90 one year. Sigh.

I’m so sorry. I never have a good time with winter squash. How did/do you plant it? Out of the one plant I decided to put in, I have one big one and one that hopefully pollinated a few days ago…

So sorry about your Hamburg! The Buckeye are so cute, I’ve never had Barnevelder but always wanted one, and we are in love with our Welsummer.

Drove to Meyer Hatchery today to pick up our order that we placed months ago. We also picked up some cheap chicks in the random chick bin. No idea what they are yet. Some are feathered legs - we were trying for Cochin with those. But, I'm sure we will get them all figured out eventually. I think that they grow in fall too so you can always plant the butternut squash now might work out if you start it from a small to medium sized plant.

I have about 4-6 weeks to my first average frost, so way too late for butternut squash. They need 90+ days.

but it's almost a requirement to grow summer squash if you're going to garden, lol

I can claim an exemption from that requirement. I was caught leaving zucchini on people's front porches, on the hoods of cars in parking lots, and in the night depository of a few banks. I am not allowed to grow zucchini in my garden. If I want any, I have to ask another gardener -- VERY nicely -- if they will give me some. They are allowed to give me ONLY one, and it can be no more than 10" long. If I go to a farmer's market, I have to show ID to buy any, and the one squash, 10" long rule applies there too.

I went and got my container of vinegar, water and a drop or two of dawn...does wonders. Didn't know about salt but it makes sense. People just don't want to put two and two together.
I keep hearing that. Lots of people are buying that Harris 30% vinegar, but for $20 a gallon i havent yet.

It's going to be miserable hot today but supposed to rain by Wednesday which will cause a blessed cool down. I don't want to jinx anything but it's almost like June weather was skipped altogether. We got July weather in June. August weather in July and September weather in August... Wonder what that means for winter?

Weird. Here it was the same thing. I saw my breath the other morning! Im still bewildered by that.

Babies are put to bed! So cute!

I think all cucumbers have finished. We actually got a few this year, so I’m happy!! The worst one was Suyo long- it succumbed to wilt soonest.

Butternuts are not doing great- we have several, but not growing as large as expected. However, we are pretty sure nutrients were lacking in the soil. We did fertilize, but not enough and so we will need to amend more next year.

Melons also have been disssppointing. We have gotten a few small ones of two varieties. However, considering we planted 11 varieties (musk melons, honeydew and watermelons) I would have expected better results.

you talk about rain and the hell heat is back here. I am thinking to start a few seeds, cucumbers, zucchini and a few winter crops. hope to move to my new place by the end of september. soil there is poor so I will have to bring a lot of manure first. luckily a friend there has sheep so I will dig his sheep run and get sort of black soil with little fresh manure.

It's raining! They kept saying this Nor'easter was going to miss us but it backed up a bit & we're getting a little sprinkle. I would love to squeeze out a half inch, but that's wishful thinking I'm sure.

I would say mine are about done also, but I'm having trouble letting go! I'm surprised the Suyos were the worst, mine held out pretty well to the wilt, they have a little, but the actual beetle damage is worse.

Man do I hate those bugs. They're on my squash too, but not causing damage there. Yet.
