What did you do in the garden today?

I caught 2 raccoons this spring in a live trap. I used peanut butter in a dish, so they couldn't pull it through the bars of the cage. Also, put it far enough back that they have to go in and step on the activator plate, but not right up against the end.

Do you have a way to get rid of them if you catch one? I shot mine, but you said you can't do that where you live.
Man! It took me bout as long to find this post as it did to decide enough is enough! That stinkin coon was out all last night into everything BUT my run/coop - Thank God!!!
So I am picking up the live trap this MORNING!
Now I hate to stop and get anything else so I wondered if yall thought he'd eat almond butter? I got a ton of it and it won't hold its consistency for nothing so thought I'd give him that rather than waste my peanut butter!
But then again if I catch this stupid thing it might have been worth it...especially since the city has nothing to offer for this type thing and I wasn't about to pay 350-500 for someone to set a trap and remove contents for 5 days!!! That is the business people need to be in man!

Yes, he'll love almond butter. Good luck!

Around here we bait with pb & a sprinkle of scratch. Nothing can resist that!

Ok, so let me get this straight.
They say the birds are sick and need to be culled.
CHicken farmers they just #%$#lk and kill all the birds.
but these sick pheasants they let loose in the parks !!

Like there is ZERO chance one could get away?
Like there is ZERO chance of a sparrow or other bird in that very same park that picks it up and flies god only knows where with it, (unless thats the plan) ??

Makes me think this whole avain flu is more bullshit to reduce food quantities again.
Just like the covid mask BS is BS because if it WAS that dangerous those masks would have to be treated as BIO waste and burned, NOT thrown in the trash, on the street, in the rivers etc etc.
I think you misunderstood. They culled the pheasants. They were not released.

Correct.
Before they got sick, exposed, they were destined to be released in the parks, paid for by the state, for the youth fall pheasant hunt.

The LAST thing this state would do is risk its wild bird population.

We are in severe drought, and I suspect any wild water sources still open to wild migrating geese are being hyper contaminated.

Pheasant are net cage ranged, but moved to netted corn stalk ranges as soon as the fields are harvested, until they sold, and then released/hunted.

The farms are hyper vigilant about sanitary protocols and you can't even visit them. But you can't keep out contaminated sparrows or geese droppings. Especially since the virus can thrive for years in the soil.

Got my Music garlic!! 9 huge heads in the pound.

I’ll plant this weekend when a bit warmer. We get a hard frost tonight/tomorrow.

So, for fall planted, just 1ā€ below surface? I’ll be planting in raised bed. Instructions said to NOT mulch on top bc can cause rot. But, in spring to cover with some compost.

Any advice?

We’ve used live traps (shoot in head to kill before releasing dead body). But, they can mangle the traps and it’s a bit of a mess.

Now, we use Z-traps. Can be an issue bc we attach it to something solid, like compost bin wood sides. So, when trapped they are able to move around and can destroy what is nearby, like a plant. The Z-trap captures them by the arm. If we set the trap (based on evidence coons are around) then we check them early morning, and apply .22 to head. Quick and cleaner than the live trap. We bait with mini marshmallows.

Just telling you about the z-trap since we have had success with it.

With a live trap, we had best success with putting it alongside a solid item (like raised bed, side of building, compost bin side) and then two sturdy stakes on other side, and THEN a block on top. They cannot move the cage this way. When they move a cage, it gives them leverage to twist it and get out. Might damage the cage beyond repair- even first time use. But, live traps are effective, just gotta plan for the crafty , nasty coon.

I have been saying that for years and people see me as a black sheep or white crow. I don't talk any more. who believes in cinderella and snow white it is his/her problem, not mine.

I was told the tip should be 2" below the surface, planted 4-6" apart. I applied leaf mulch last year, and pine needles this year. The last several years, they've been in a raised bed. This year, I saw the evidence of garlic maggots. Not too many, but enough to think I'd better relocated them to a different part of the garden. So now they're at the other end, and not in a raised bed.

I hadn't heard that mulch on top could cause rot. I read to mulch lightly to help prevent frost from heaving them up too much.

My bulbs have 3 or 4 LARGE cloves in each. A few had 5. One had 8, which was a record for me.
