What did you do in the garden today?

My hubby does. I don't. We need it to insulate the ground for winter. I might actually like it if it stayed off the roads.
I hear that! Great source of nitrogen for the garden too. Thankfully I work from home & work for a school so generally if the roads are bad there is no work anyway. If I'm honest, probably the main reason I root for snow. :gig

But I have to say, if I hated snow & loved sun I'd move. I don't get people that live in New England & hate snow (or anywhere that snows).

Brought in the 2 rosemary plants. That's about all done in the garden today. DH will have to bring in the fig, too heavy for me.

Well its getting windy as hell from this next storm / hurricane getting ready to roll through, it knocked my banana tree over however it don't look like much harm, ill leave thing laying over until this thing blows over. no sense risking snapping any trunks and killing an entire tree now is there.

I see snow showers in the 10 day! :celebrate

I've got a 20 quart pot of chicken broth going, I'm running out & could use the room the bones were taking up. Can that tomorrow.

Looks like it'll be time to blow out the water lines, that's sad. Might have to plug in the waterers too.

Made a batch of pumpkin crumb cake & a pumpkin/white chocolate chip loaf to freeze for surgery desserts.

@igorsMistress was it you that asked for the recipe for the cranberry/orange bundt cake? Sorry, I forgot to post it - but it's low carb/gluten free & made with almond & coconut flours so you probably don't want it. It wasn't all that spectacular either, but not bad. https://www.peteandgerrys.com/egg-recipes/gluten-free-cranberry-pound-cake
I need all those things lol. Thanks for posting the link!

I went to early voting before it closed last week. It's easier to get the littles in and out fast if there's no line to fight.

So this morning we were up at 5:30AM and got our butts in gear and drove the hour and a half to the title company to sign the closing papers. It's official. We now own 10 acres of mesquite, pencil cactus, ocotillo, yucca, and various other native plants, sparse grasses, and (at certain times of the year) flowers even.

Friday's frost forecast has turned into a freeze instead, so warm weather gardening is well and truly over. Going to pass on the garlic this year. I can't get it in the ground at the homestead fast enough, and I don't want to plant anything here that would take too long to harvest. Store-bought will have to do this year for cooking.

On our way back, hubby pointed out a truck yard where the big big flooring beams for semis and heavy duty trailers were all just stacked up. All super weathered and old. He's going to ask about getting some for our construction projects. They make really great garden bed walls so long as you can get ones that aren't treated. Seems fairly common that they aren't, weirdly.

Most people would consider our native plants to be pests, fit only for bulldozing and burning. But... mesquite pods can be ground into flour or used as chicken/livestock feed, ocotillo flowers apparently make a lovely chamomile-type tea, various parts of certain yucca varieties are edible or extremely useful for making cordage, and so on and so forth. I'm hoping to get to properly explore the property this weekend (time to break out my boots) and see if there's any candelilla. That would be a fun find! It's a waxy plant that you can harvest the wax from and make candles.

Thanks everybody for all the well wishes! Y'all have been so kind and thoughtful, I really appreciate it. Hugs to you all!
Congratulations! My chickens adore mesquite. They like to eat the leaves and there have been no ill effects.

Good afternoon gardeners. I took some food out for the chicks. Eventually the rest of the crew realized I was there and came over for a snack; of course the smaller pieces are so much better than the bigger ones 🙄. Elvis, who was the last to know I was out there, came running over like he caught his girls cheating with me :lau That guy cracks me up. Anyway, it should be cool enough Friday to work on the shed, thank goodness because it’s a disaster! I hope to work some more on the beds in the garden this weekend also, which will require a trip to Home Depot for blocks.Nothing outside for me today, we’ve been up since 0230 for the eclipse and I’m pooped after working. I think I’ll take my shower and watch a movie until hubs gets home. No idea what’s for dinner. Have a good night all.
