What did you do in the garden today?

Since Etsy has free shipping I bought another packet of seed,
I want to try growing the Early Girl 2 tomato, description says each plant can produce 100 or more tomatoes and tomatoes are bigger than the original Early Girl? Grows to 36 inches.

I have over 100 tomato seed varieties now, lol. My mother in law found some super sized ones and ordered them.frok some obscure place. I'll definitely need to plant those now.... because I need tomatoes the size of my head.

I went out to lock up the chickens and found ice in the heated waterer. I'm afraid it's kaput, and we're home for the duration of the storm. I'll be going out 3-4 times a day to give them warm water.

That's one of those things I always have back up for, since they die in the middle of when I need them. Extra heated stall buckets and chicken waterer.

Currently feels like -53'F actual temp is -17. I overslept due to not sleeping at all last night from worry and howling winds and maybe the chocolate chip cookie I had as I walked to bed, so DH did chores this morning. He said out of the wind, it's not bad out. Concur, bundled like a yeti, it isn't bad at all out. HOWEVER the 200 yard walk to and from the house and barns is all prairie wind, and your eyeballs do NOT like it.
All the critters are locked inside far from the wind. -17 isn't fun, but not their first rodeo. Some hens still don't have back feathers, and honestly, I can't believe they're making it, but we feed hot breakfast, hot snack and a hot dinner, so we shall see.
They boys are locked in the barn, and not happy, but they don't know what they're missing outside so. ya. They don't get to come out until Christmas morning, when our high will be 20'F. High today MIGHT be -5F.

I was reading today that the north plains will be around 70 below zero! My prayers go out to everyone dealing with that giant yuck... Hoping we don't get a slew of threads for birds with frostbite (or worse...)! I'm definitely concerned for mine and we are only dealing with 30 below. My birds will be too dumb to stay inside....Just watch and see. Ugh.
-70 windchill isn't fun. Coldest I've had to work in is -76'F. It SUUUUCKED. You can't keep your eyes from watering even in goggles. The air is so dry it makes them water, and the water freezes, rinse and repeat.
When frostbite starts to set in, the pain is UNREAL, thawing fingers and toes and nose is unholy painful.

This morning, I talked DH into me going into town to get a few things. (Not that he wouldn't "let" me, just he didn't want to go.)

This was a charmed trip. We need a happy story, so here goes.

1. Stop to fill up car. Another customer says the local grocery where I'm going was a madhouse yesterday. Ok, I'll go there first, methinks.

2. Grocery store. Not too busy. I park in the side lot so it'll be easy in/out. I get the stuff I need, no problem. I get in a checkout line. The woman ahead of me says to go ahead of her, as I only have a few items. The man ahead of her says the same thing! I'm next in line! I chat with that guy, and he's going to Arizona in a couple weeks to prospect for gold, goes every year. And, I have a $5 dollar coupon! Yippeee!!

3. TSC. I don't know if they have delivery out to me. I've never seen it advertised, so maybe, maybe not. They do have another heated pet bowl, and it's $22, vs $70+ for a metal waterer and heated base. AND, I have a rewards member $10 credit! SCORE!

4. My last stop is the local farm market. They have apples and squash on a BOGO special. I get their last half bushel of Macintosh (for sauce) and a free half bushel of Empire (for drying).

5. I get home and lo and behold! the gas company has come to fill up our propane tank! If they couldn't do it today, they wouldn't be able to get back here until next week. Or month.

We are all set for the storm, just hunkering down and waiting for whatever happens. The gas can is full, the generator is at the ready. We're not going anywhere, just staying home with the dog. And the chickens.

They say the tomatoes on the bottom of the plant grow the biggest, so if we want a tomato the size of our head, we may need to remove some on the top.
