What did you do in the garden today?

This is the best design I have seen for 5 gallon buckets, but its too expensive...

Woah! They are very proud of their cheap plastic $129 for 12 is nuts! I think you could diy something like this with a plastic container, drill and pvc. If you can find containers cheap such as thrift store or dollar store, this could be done for around $2 per unit I think.

No gardening today... It's cold and wet - no rain today but the ground is wet from rain and melting snow since the precipitation Thursday.

Walmart is closing a store near me. I went in today and checkout it the clearance sale. I could have gotten vermiculite for around $4 per bag - I didn't grab it but might go back for it. Not much else I need in the garden department though.

I tried a new jam recipe tonight.
Chocolate covered cherries jam

6 cups fresh or frozen pitted, dark, sweet cherries, coarsely chopped
6 TBSP pectin
1/4 cup lemon juice
6 cups of sugar ( I used 5)
2/3 cups unsweetened cocoa

Combine cherries, pectin and lemon juice and bring to a roiling boil over high heat, stirring constantly. ( it was pretty thick so definitely needed to be stirred to prevent scorching ).
Mix cocoa & sugar together. Add all at once to cherry mixture. Return to full roiling boil. Boil hard 1 minute, stirring constantly. Ladle into prepared jars. 1/4” headspace. Remove air bubbles. Water bath 10 minutes. Turn off heat, remove water bath lid and let jars sit in water 5 minutes. Remove from canner and let cool.

The stacking two bucket wicking method is better than my rock method. The only reason I am using lava rocks is I have so much of it laying around and it came in handy.

Hey all. I’m so glad we aren’t getting your snow! DH is going away for work for a week, I would be stranded & stuck inside. He’s outside now moving feeders & waters so I can get to them while he’s gone. He had to fix the furnace yesterday since I can’t load pellets. I’m a little nervous about being alone, so many things I cant do for my self.

I am thankful the cold is coming tho, I was worried about my peach tree.

My other lettuces have all sprouted, everything but the spinach. 🤔 The buttercruch is big enough to start eating.
I understand your concern Sueby. Keep your phone charged and handy and be careful!

Haven't started any seeds yet, but I better get moving soon. I did dig through my seeds and don't need to buy any more, but we will be picking up some plants we ordered from our local native plant sale in a couple weeks.
For a change, we're ready for them - did a lot of work this winter digging out blackberries on some sloped areas, in preparation for planting native salal bushes that will take over, hopefully.
Last weekend we prepped all the garden beds, prettied-up the flower bed in front, and hacked a bunch of blackberries of course. Yesterday and today we stripped the deep-bedding from the chicken coop, finally hung the garden gates that had been sitting around for too long, and made a base for a new garden shed. We got the cinder blocks it will sit on all leveled, and dragged over the heavy wooden platform (thank you, freebie packing crate from my workplace) to make sure it would sit on the blocks without wobbling - I still need to stain it before we can start putting the shed together, but the rain decided to interfere with that by increasing from a misty drizzle to a full-on downpour.

We adopted a new cat! When I moved my horses to a new boarding barn, I also brought home the latest feral kitty who had just shown up at the old barn. Meet Sarah:
She and Pumpkin love each other and get along amazingly!

A sweet kitty with the loudest purr, we've been keeping her inside for the time being, but now that she's spayed and vaccinated, as soon as we get her microchip sorted she can start joining her sister on outdoor adventures. tempImageSVTZPw.png tempImageY6Ch7J.png
