What did you do in the garden today?

I've been slowly working on converting our old grill into an herb garden... because why not?! Lol
Now I just need to mount a container on the right side and put the grate back on top so the plant will grow through it. 😆

I went outside this morning and picked some lettuce for my Deluxe hamburger I was making for breakfast and I discovered a new way to eat the left over lettuce and sliced tomatoes.

I took a handful of fresh oregano leaves and put them in a small dipping bowl filled with virgin olive oil. I also put some sea salt in another tiny dipping bowl and used it to sprinkle on only one half slice of tomato and I used a fork to scoop up a few oregano leaves from the oil and put it on the half slice of tomato and made a tomato lettuce wrap.

I never thought of eating lettuce and tomato this way until today. Salt, oil, tomato acidity, and the fresh taste of oregano replaces salad dressing in my world under a shell.

It is a raw, cold day here today - I have an urge for some gardening tasks, so I am planting Cleome seeds in a 50-cell pack tray. The seedling medium is traditionally hard to moisten - so I used some hot water applied with a watering can. Then I noticed that the rain today was moderate, so I put the tray on the seat of an outdoor garden bench for the natural precipitation to filter in. I think rainfall has some natural Nitrogen additions - so that might be a benefit too! After the cells are properly moistened, I most likely will sow the seeds and place the entire assemblage on a heat mat. When sitting on the back porch, a number of cleomes in flower will definitely help round out the flower garden picture this summer. As is the case these days, Cleomes by the 4-pack last year were a significant investment. Tomorrow will be a somewhat more moderate day, so some Larkspur will be direct sown for some color in the same floral vista. I hope for some good germination - if not, the process is still a great deal of fun.

Not much today.
My crappy hand hurts.
I raked a whole lot of winter blahs out of the barn and hauled all the loose hay to a muddy patch in the pasture. If nothing else, maybe the alpacas will stomp me up some brick materials. At worst, they'll roll in it and end up looking like chia pets. Place your bets now.
I pulled some grape cuttings, trimmed them, and put them in some water. Maybe this time next month, I'll be able to get them into some soil, and then add them to the sale in late May.

52 out and so are the birds.

Taking a quick break from the loom for some yogurt and turned on the computer. On my youtube feed it popped up a video about a guy saying not to use producer's pride, which is what he normally buys as it is cheaper. All winter out of like 14 layers he's only had 4 or 5 eggs a day, BUT last week he switched to DuMor and tada...now almost all are laying everyday.
OMG do people NOT understand that they pretty much STOP laying all winter? Especially the ones over a year old?! It fricken has NOTHING to do with that feed.
I'm suddenly up to my eyeballs in eggs, and I was down to two and three eggs a day all winter, hens aged 1-8 years.
Unbelievable.
X 2. And what else does their flock get other than feed? Table scraps? Scratch? Etc…

Good afternoon gardeners. @Wee Farmer Sarah I will hope 15” is a mistake! @Sueby glad you have sunshine and melting snow. It’s sunny but cool here, with low 70s in the forecast. The chickens are still spreading straw in the backyard. All the girls are laying, even the two pullets, I found two wee eggs today and caught Toast coming out of the coop area. :yesss: We didn’t get a ton of rain so I’ll definitely have to water this weekend, it’s impossible to water everything in one weekend so I’m always watering it seems. The crew has been a huge help keeping the weeds at bay in the shade garden and it’s so nice to have it all cleaned up. Tomorrow we put the shade on the bottom and move a few pavers in, then I’m waiting on sprouts to grow.
