What did you do in the garden today?

I weeded a little in the strawberry bed, gave a tour of my garden and projects, and shared some downtime in the garden swings.

Two girlfriends came over and, as a late birthday gift, brought dinner along and helped me get the last of my structure up and screwed together. What a blessing! I'll always think of this when I look outside and see the chicken house.

I also showed them how to make water kefir and bottle it up for a second ferment, while we drank some of an earlier bottling I had chilled. They loved it and took grains home with them.

Sure am, but I didn't put enough consideration into the outward force of the weight of the ribs on the foundation boards. I hoped the crossbeams at the top would be enough, but I should have known better. They are just too high.

I screwed in a brace across the bottom of one set of ribs, but I don't really want to do that for the rest. That's all I need, to trip my way across the run... LOL

Got a little more done on the irrigation system tonight. It's probably somewhere between 40-50% done now. I've been letting it run every day which has been a good idea because that week solid of rain they predicted was a big nothing burger. It's been 5 days now and it's not rained a drop since the short sprinkle we had on Friday.

Thanks for the encouragement on the ROS. I will keep an eye out for sprouts. Fingers crossed.

If it's not meant to be portable, I would suggest stakes on the outside to keep the sides from pushing out.
Another thought is a vertical board between your high braces and the top beam - this would prevent the top beam from sagging and therefore prevent the studs from pressing out as much. There's still the factor of flex on those studs - 2x4s turned the sam way a wall would be built would be less like to flex as the 3.5" thickness of the board prevents it from bowing as much versus the direction of the 1.5" sides.

All our seeds are sowed!!! Except maybe some more lacinato kale seeds since the first sowing failed (old seeds). Some things are still in the greenhoyse and will need to be planted out later, but this is real progress!

I just went into it, flying blind. I looked for plans for the shape I wanted, but didn't find any.

I tried to keep costs down, but in the end, I would have been better off doubling the foundation boards and turning the studs.

I think I'll drive stakes in, as you suggested. I'm going to lay heavy rocks around the bottom. I've got all I could ever need.

The yellow apple cherry and mochi cherry seeds I just got from Johnny seeds had a 100% germination rate, so I can't complain. However, I did get dead lettuce seeds from them early in the year. This experience has taught me to never buy discounted sale seeds from them.

You could always go to the air bb site and see if it is rented out.

Well, I went to the website and it did not say if the place was rented out at present, only bookings for the future. Besides that, I don't want to have to be checking the computer every day to see if people are going to be renting the place. I just lock everything up, and frankly, it's not the Air B'n'B people I worry about. It is the fact that we now have people coming and going all the time and I no longer have a clue who some of them are.

Being one of the few year-round residents here at the lake property, I used to keep watch on the houses and cabins of the "summer residents." Not that it was a big deal, but I would call the neighbors if I saw anyone I did not know that was around their cabins. Believe it or not, some people are more than happy to try to move into a vacant cabin for the winter here in Minnesota if the owner is residing in Arizona for the winter.
