What did you do in the garden today?

I finally broke down and harvested my biggest kohlrabi. I’ve been letting one go this year to see how big it would get. The leaves were getting pretty lacy do to cabbage worms so I figured it was time to get it while it was still worth getting.

That's a big kohlrabi! When I had kohlrabis, I would harvest them at about half that size. Actually, I would cut of some of leaves and cook them up long before I would take the kohlrabi itself. The leaves are very good to eat if you cut them off when they are young and tender. If you wait too long, they become woody, as does the kohlrabi.

Dear Wife won't eat any kohlrabi, so I gave up growing them. I like the taste, mainly raw with some ranch dressing. But I was the only one eating them and it was too much for me all at once. Last year, I think half of my kohlabi was wasted. Well, nothing gets wasted. I'm sure I fed it to the chickens. But I would rather use my garden space for things both Dear Wife and I enjoy, so this year, sad to say, kohlrabi was off the list.

This is my first year growing this variety. It claims to never get woody even if you let them get big. Its called superschemeltz https://www.rareseeds.com/kohlrabi-...PykJQfbj1rIBF_tWQNGUlG5cGYMJE-ZBoCdEIQAvD_BwE.

I picked the other ones about 1/2 this size and they were really good. This one did get a bit woody on the root end but I still got over 3 pounds of good tender kohlrabi out of it. I like to steam it

I'll have to look into that superscherneltz variety. That sounds interesting. Might be able to space out the kohlrabi harvest and not get too many all at once.

Have you ever eaten the kohlrabi leaves? I steamed them up like spinach and Swiss chard. Very nice and tasty. Also good in soups.

I have tried the leaves raw and like them ok mixed into a salad. Never tried them on a soup. This year most of the leaves have went to the chickens. I throw them in the garage fridge to keep them cold then offer them to the chickens on the hot days. They really like them and don’t mind if the cabbage worms have eaten holes in them.

When I’m done working around poison ivy I take a cold shower and use Dawn dish soap. The Dawn cuts the oils and the cold water shrinks your pores so the poison ivy oils can't soak into your skin as easily.
Went to the Farm garden this morning and helped my friend ( and several other helpers ) harvest the grapes from the Niagara vineyard.
Got home and not long after that one of the grandkids accidentally let both of our dogs out of our gated yard. 😢
They’ve been gone for over 6 hours now. I’ve driven around looking for them, posted on Facebook and in a lost pets forum. Also put out articles of clothes with my husband and my scent on them as well as a towel one of the dogs slept on last night. Also put out food for them.
They are chipped and have collars on. Only 1 has tags on because the other dog chews her tags up.

Well, that sounds very tasty. Not sure if I'll ever do it, as it takes a LOT of salt and sugar. I wonder if you can re-use the salt/sugar mixture for a second batch?
My guess is the salt/sugar mix can be reused. Just let it dry and sift out the chunks. Supposed to be like egg yolk parmesan cheese. It does sound tasty!

:fl Hope you get them back, safe and sound.
