What did you do in the garden today?

As a RN, one of the standard questions we ask people is if they had any recent falls. Falling is a major health concern as it might indicate a number of concerns.

:old Lots of women of a certain age say they fell down and broke their hip. In reality, many of them had a hip that broke and then they fell down. If you fell down and have hip and back pain, I would encourage you to see a doctor, if you can. But I might be overly cautious as a trained RN who has had to care for a number of patients with broken hips. Do what you can to stay out of the bed and/or wheelchair. Hope you recover quickly.
I've read that before, about the hip breaking that caused the fall.

Having children can be hard on a woman's body later in life. I think young women having children should be thinking about their bone health later in life and taking measures to ensure they have better bone health then our mothers and grandmothers. Maybe they do these days.

My mother fell down and broke her hip. She never got out of the wheelchair for the rest of her life. That was too sad. Absolutely, don't take your mobility for granted.
I read recently that it isn't calcium deficiency that is the issue, but copper deficiency. You need both.

I picked all my turnips this morning and got all the greens into the freezer. The turnip roots weren't worth trying to clean up enough to eat - too much insect damage.

So, I decided to try replanting all the turnip roots in hopes of getting another nice crop of turnip greens. Maybe doing this will be better than trying to plant seeds to get more greens before it freezes outside.

I loosened the ground and mixed in some chicken compost before I replanted the roots. I made sure that the cut off tops of the roots were above ground, thinking sunlight would encourage them to grow faster. Fun little experiment! Hope it works.

If it doesn't, that's ok because I have 18 red Russian kale plants that are doing well since I set out the plants last month. Those should provide plenty of greens.

I read recently that it isn't calcium deficiency that is the issue [of fragile bones], but copper deficiency. You need both.

No doubt information has progressed since my Nursing school days 15 years ago. That's why I try to say bone health in general, and recommend people go to medical professionals who are up on the latest best practices.

Picking tomatoes!
