What did you do in the garden today?

We are getting some fall color. Not peak color yet. Second pic is what I use to hull black walnuts. A board with 1 5/8 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 holes. I put it over a bucket and smack them through a hole with a hammer. Most nuts fit the 1 1/2 hole.

I was born in zone 7b and don't like the cold weather. I now live in zone 9a and I am really happy here. winters here are like spring with just about up to 2 weeks of snow if the winter is hard. I can grow many fruit trees and keep my garden alive year round.
I grew up in Zone 5b where we got Lake Effect snow, wind, and ice. Now live in 7B. I like the winters just fine here.... 😂

We have tons of squirrels. They aren't as annoying as the chipmunks or mice but they chewed through my chicken waterer this summer & will dig up the garden looking for buried nuts. We have a hickory tree & I love to watch the squirrels go from branch to branch dropping the nuts. Last week there were 6 of them in the tree dropping nuts at the same time.
Does anyone collect hickory nuts to eat? I cracked one open. It is a LOT of work to get the little bits of nutmeat out.

If you can heat the basement just a little bit you might be able to grow a bunch of stuff. Broccoli lettuce cabbage celery carrots spinach and maybe even more. It's worth a try.

So, 63 F is too cold for greens? I might be able to construct a tent like structure and bump the heat up in that, but I don't want to spend $$$ heating the entire basement to save a few bucks growing food.

My allergy shot buddy, every Monday, grows lettuce with a hydroponic system in her basement all year. She loves it.

Any links or references I can read to make such a setup? It was mentioned that 63 F might be too cold to grow stuff in the basement. Would an aquarium heater in the hydroponics be one way to raise the temps for the plants without having to heat the entire basement?

optimal for lettuce is 55-65', so I think you're fine

Yeah, that's what I thought. I would like to grow maybe some lettuce, Swiss Chard, and Kale at a minimum. Those are all cool weather greens from what I understand. A nice 63 F with LED lights to encourage growth would work, I think.
