I have a theory, when I relocated here, I had a guy deliver a load of "garden soil" & the jerk dropped off nasty fill dirt, very sandy. Where I moved from, garden soil is rich. Apparently not down here. Anyway, I was building a large raised garden area, flowers facing northeast & the veggies facing southwest...that was the plan anyway. Well, nothing would grow in that crap. The 1st time I planted the bulbs & Hydrangea, it looked nice for about 2 mos. The following year they all looked awful. So when I dug up the bulbs, there were no baby bulbs. I think those particular bulbs needed richer soil. They did grow & bloom better after I moved those 10 bulbs to better soil but the other 90 or so bulbs are simply gone. As far as the nasty soil...I rented a Bobcat to put in the 300 foot gravel driveway one weekend & after that I scooped & moved that crap soil to a low spot I needed to build up due to rain flooding adjacent to the farmer's fields. The only things that thrived in that crappy dirt were the fireants.Recently read in a tulip catalog that some varieties are better at coming back. Some produce too many baby bulbs, which robs the original bulb and then they peter out. Darwins are supposed to be better at it, but your experience proves otherwise in your area and garden. Squirrels are bulb poachers. I'm trying tulips this year in pots. My master gardener friend said to dig them up every year. I'm not sure on the timing of that. I'll have to get more info.
I don't know why I had that awful reaction to DiGiorno pizza, whether it was packaged that way, or it could've been a nasty brand of pepperoni, did the cook add additional topping with msg, no clue. It made me very ill. I have not even gone near a frozen pizza since then.MSG has to be listed on the label (legally anyway), though it can be listed as a couple different things. I get violently ill when I eat it, tho 'they' say there is no such thing as an allergy to it. My body disagrees, lol.
In CA I don't think a flame thrower would be a good idea due to the drought but I am still trying to figure out how to get rid of the weeds without chemicals. I haven't tried to save zinnia seeds but I don't have a problem growing them, of course that could be the zone I am in.We use fire now. LOL. DH has a flame thrower he uses. It works super well, just hit them with a little heat & it changes the cell structure of the plant & kills it roots & all.
Ugh! That's why I stopped growing rutabaga - the stupid cabbage moths. I'd like to grow broccoli or cauliflower but it just grosses me out so much. I was thinking next year in a GreenStalk & cover it from the instant I plant.
I'm headed to the garden store at lunch to pick up a ton of seed packets on clearance.
Does anyone save zinnia seeds? Easy enough to do? Or should I just buy them?
This is a mesh cover made for trees and bushes - but works for the GreenStalk.com vertical garden systemDo share the info. We have moths, carrot maggot flies, root maggot terds, etc. I don't grow carrots and radishes anymore because of them.
What brand weed whacker is that? I need one I can handle without getting splattered!I tried out my new weed whacker. It’s awesome! It eats through poison ivy without splattering the plant juices everywhere.
I have a bunch of little bugs that kinda resemble a baby grasshopper but without the legs,(little jerks bite), and also there's some white butterflies I think are eating mine too.Does anybody know what kind of pest is eating my potato vines? It started on one plant and now it's spreading. I couldn't find any worms or other insects. Maybe they only come out at night. LOL
I sprayed them with BT (bacillus thuringiensis) because I had some mixed up for my brassica plants. Don't know if it will work for the tater pests.

I had bok choi, collards and cauliflower starts all covered underneath the same piece of floating row cover for the last couple weeks. Something loves munching on the bok choi, eats a bit on the cauliflower and leaves the collards completely alone! I sprayed them all with BT.
I won't plant bok choi or cauliflower again. I don't like having to control pest problems. I'll stick to collards and my red Russian kale as my brassica sources. Kale gets munched on a little bit by something but not enough for me to worry about.

My chickens wanted to help but I didn't know if BT would hurt them.
