What did you do in the garden today?

Got my 3 new Russian pomegranates yesterday. They are MUCH smaller than I expected... Maybe around 4 inches tall. I will keep them in the sunroom for a month or two before transplanting them outside.

I did decide to transplant my 2 Sugar Bee apple saplings and a hibiscus into larger pots. Once the rain comes back consistently in the fall and it's not so hot, I'll try to get those in the ground too.

My first year planting corn looks like a success. We harvested around 10-12 dozen of the biggest ears today. I left a lot more than that on the plants to continue growing. Some of the ears look a little on the smaller side but they sure taste like they are perfectly ripe. Maybe I under fertilized or maybe this variety just runs a touch smaller than the grocery store variety. At any rate I’m very happy with the results. I’ll have plenty to get my family through the year and some extra to share with friends

I don't like feeling greasy, oily, sticky or just gunky. Most bug repellents unfortunately are that way on our skin. I might try taking some Lavender & Mint, make a lotion or like a strong tea & try putting that on, see what it does. I do not seem to a mosquito magnet, a few may bite me when I'm still out there at dusk. Those little biting gnats sized bugs get me & the flies that resemble a regular fly, except they bite, they get me. Also, the occasional fire ant. I do use a Lavender moisturizer but I think I want to try & make it stronger. Anyone try doing that?

Well I did a web search...wow, can try Basil too.

When I get fire ant bites/stings what works best is a thick paste made from baking soda and water. I slather it on the affected area. It takes the fire out and I rarely blister.

Does anyone shop at Aldi? If so what’s your store like? We have one store that’s not even that close and I wasn’t impressed. The tortillas weren’t fresh, selection wasn’t great, etc
We have two, both are very clean, well-stocked most of the time. The prices are good, and the natural (no corn syrup) selections are nice to have available.

I didn't care for the Lidl store that I checked out once.

I go about once a month or 3. So things I like some I don't. If I could only shop at one store it wouldn't be aldi. But it is one of 3 grocery stores I shop at regularly.
Their goat cheese is cheap and doesn't bother me. The other store's are 2x as much and I swear there's cow milk in there because it bothers me.
I like the guacamole 6 pac of single servings, jerky dog treats, blue organic corn chips, can organic pinto beans, organic salsa, can salmon, pole caught skipjack tuna, organic grapes and bananas.
I have gotten a ex large stock pot and a spaghetti pot with strainer, the softest blankets and jacket and the thickest exercise mat.
I love their "specials" aisle.

And:
Toasting bread
Pretzels
Sliced cheese (Havarti and Gouda)
Nitrite free deli meats
Condiments
Canned soup
Fragrance free laundry detergent
Frozen waffles
Angus hamburger patties
Frozen vegetables
Juice
Instant coffee
Granola bars
Unsalted butter

And more.

I really appreciate how so much of their food doesn't have the additives that many name brands do. My allergies appreciate it.

The melons weren't bothered, good.

While we were on vacation some areas of the yard got overgrown, then it rained for two weeks. It's pretty bad, and the heat prevents me from doing more. I tackled a couple areas near the house early this morning, mainly using my hedge clippers. Afterwards I took about 12 bags of aluminum cans to the salvage yard, got $22 for my efforts.

Look who I found while cleaning!

A box turtle!

I couldn't get a good look at its eyes so am not sure of its sex. I moved it out of the newly cleared area and closer to the compost pile. It will find plenty of bugs there.
