What did you do in the garden today?

My grandmother was very poor. She lived off a tiny pension and her social security in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She used to shop at Aldi's up there. I went with her a time or two. The store was always filthy. Box trash and paper all over a floor that looked like it had never been swept a day in it's life. Most of the canned goods were scratch & dent cast offs. (Now that my husband is a health inspector, I question if it was even legal for them to sell those canned goods in that shape.) The place stunk to high heaven like musty, moldy food. Most bread or snack products (like donuts, Little Debbie type snacks) were always expired. I can't vouch for sour milk but it wouldn't have surprised me a single bit... My grandma died in 1996. However I went to a different Aldi's in a different town with my Mother-in-Law about 10 years ago. It was more or less the same experience. I don't even remember WHY we went in there because she is very particular about where she shops and that is definitely not her type of store.

I don't like having to "rent" the shopping carts for a quarter. Yeah, you get it back when you return the cart but still, I don't like the system.

I went to Aldi's one time, to try it out. I got a great deal on clear shower curtains (in their "deal" aisle, or whatever it's called) and got 4. I use those as windbreaks around my chickens' run and needed some, so the timing was fortuitous.

I was hoping to find some things that hubby would like as well as the more expensive brands, but didn't. I recall the store being clean and well lit, but other than the shower curtains, nothing wowed me, and I haven't been back.

It does sort of look like spaghetti squash. Mine started out pretty white but then quickly started to turn yellow. Mystery squash! I'll be interest to see what it actually is when it's done cooking on the vine.

Haven't even been out in the garden today, kind of raining a bit here & there. Humid. I need to pick some eggplant & beans, that I know. Man going away sure does make for a lot of work when you get back!
Yes, it does. I was gone for 2 weeks. Glad to have friends that came to pick things, and save some for me.

The melons weren't bothered, good.

While we were on vacation some areas of the yard got overgrown, then it rained for two weeks. It's pretty bad, and the heat prevents me from doing more. I tackled a couple areas near the house early this morning, mainly using my hedge clippers. Afterwards I took about 12 bags of aluminum cans to the salvage yard, got $22 for my efforts.

Look who I found while cleaning!

A box turtle!

I couldn't get a good look at its eyes so am not sure of its sex. I moved it out of the newly cleared area and closer to the compost pile. It will find plenty of bugs there.
I was out squirrel hunting when I was a kid and actually witnessed a pair of box turtles mating. It was probably a rare event because I read somewhere that female box turtles only need to mate once every 5 years or so in order to lay fertile eggs each season.
