What did you do in the garden today?

Puttered around outside. Did a few sweet cherry grafts and Shiro plum grafts. They were Shiro prunings from when I planted my new tree. Looks like 4 rainy days ahead. Saw my test results. As suspected, I am in AFIB. Now to see what the doctor says. I suspect another ablation procedure. Four years since the last one.

my mother has always had heart problems. she turned 81 yesterday. she eats tons of hot peppers and says that helps her. before she started to eat them she was on pills and getting worse. she does take pills besides eating hot peppers.

I'm an insane person and I bought 70 bare root strawberry plants. Going to plant them everywhere... Everywhere there's mulch. Maybe even out front. I bought them for DS since all of the ones from home Depot had crown rot. Not one lived. Now it's time to go buck wild!

With those, comes 5 more blackberry plants for me. Also insanity. Why. Why do I do these things.
Just like chicken math, there is plant math.

There is a related illness, called "Plant Amnesia/Seed Amnesia." That particular malady goes like this: You buy/order plants/seeds. They aren't at your house, or, are tucked away, out of sight. Seed packets are very good at this! You forget that you have them. Totally gone from your memory, or just a little hazy thought like, "Yeah, I have some of those somewhere, or on order."

You buy more plants/seeds, picking them out in person. You take them home. Now the flashbacks start. "Oh! Didn't I already buy some of these? Where are they? When do I need to plant them?"

Sometimes the trigger is finding several (or several dozen) plants or seed packets tucked away, safely waiting for their time to go into the soil. Sometimes the memories flood back when someone says, "Honey, why did you get more of these? You have 50 of them stored on the back porch or in the basement. And didn't you say you ordered more stuff from Gurney's last week? Where will you plant it all?"

One year, pretty sure it was voles, we had them digging all kinds of holes in the raised beds with peppers. The peppers didn’t like their roots quite so aerated, so they didn’t produce a whole lot. We did buy Vole-X “poison” and that seemed to help. We had voles in our strawberry bed, but now we plant garlic in the strawberry bed, among the strawberry plants, and no more voles!
Yes, a good garlic border all around the garden bed helps solve many things. At the cabin I had garlic in every raised bed

I had the opposite malady this year. “Oh, I’m certain I have Rosemary seeds left from last year! I don’t need more!”

Guess what I was out of.

My plant math usually happens with volunteers.

I keep my seeds in a giant 5" three ring binder. I fold the packets in half and put them in trading card binder sheets. I do however have more seeds coming in the mail ...... Flower seeds. Last year was my first year growing flowers from seeds. It turned into a bigger operation this year since my favorite local nursery closed down. They had fair prices. I decided my money was better spent learning to grow my own from seed than feeding more money to Home Desperate. Especially for annuals.

The blackberries I ordered are thornless primocane. Prime ark freedom. These set fruit two times a year. I have two chester blackberries and will probably switch them out for these if they do well. Most of my berry bramble is Olallieberry. I started with one 13 years ago. Now from that plant I made 5 more; not including ones I've given away. Olallieberries sell for $20 per half pound, frozen here. $10 per basket fresh. It's crazy. I don't sell mine but I use mine every year. I got 12# last year. Made jam, syrup, and froze for pies. All gone except the jam.

Anyway, I digress.

That up there is all evidence that I probably don't need any more plants or seeds. 🤣

It brings me joy though! Both chicken math and plant math. 😂 If I had a basement I'd be in trouble. More room to store jars... Mason jar math! 🤣

Pretty sure you and I are drinking the same crazy juice from the same mason jar. 😂

I keep buying more stuff when I absolutely have no where left to put anything.... I have become an expert organizer of plants...but everything has its limits. I went to Lowe's recently to pick up the hardware for the new grape trellis and was eyeballing some lovely calla lilies. I didn't buy them (amazingly) but I did muse that there should be a Garden Addicts Anonymous support counselor standing at the entrance. 🙄
