What did you do in the garden today?

I fed the chickens today, so they can scratch out the weeds for me. You see, I am getting kinda old and tired of weeding and because I got really behind on the weeding and the garden is so full of weeds this year, I have put the chickens to work weeding it. Every day I close a couple dozen chickens into the 60x120 garden yard and throw some feed into the beds I want weeded. They do a great job of weeding and fertilizing at the same time and they work for chicken feed. They also eliminate any bugs or insects they find and it is really easier on my old back. I am really late this year starting my winter garden, but even if I do not plant for the winter, it will be very fertile and weeded for the early spring planting in February!

Love your reasoning. I may follow suit.

Today I harvested more Mexican limes from our gianormous tree, and juiced them for the freezer. We will be so happy to have that juice for our margaritas come next spring! Would be nice if the crop paced itself a bit, though. The Meyer lemons are starting to turn color and should be ready in a couple of weeks. Also picked some more marketmore and armenian cukes and tried to give them away but only got rid of half...sigh...guess I'll make some more pickles!

Oh, and plucked a couple of watermelons from atop the garden structure. Have no idea why they decided to run straight up the sides of the cage and grow on the roof, but oh, well.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about your greenhouse - we get some fun dust storms here in AZ, too - although I guess it's a bit more usual and not accompanied by devastating drought for us than in your case. Hope y'all get some rain real soon! I sowed some snap peas today and am planting some hardneck garlic tomorrow. Still harvesting the last of the watermelons and cukes...the hens are loving the extra yum-yums when there are too many to eat at once. I have already made about 10 batches of pickles, so at this point the girls get the extras
