What did you do with your flock today?

What a day. My feet hurt. My legs hurt. My back and hands hurt too. But I pretty much got my chicken run finished. There's one mouse-size hole to plug up, and I need to pile flagstones in one corner over the hardware cloth apron.

This is how I attached the HWC apron to the run baseboard. I ripped a 2x4 in half on my table saw, and attached the edge of the screen to the cut side. I then nailed the split 2 by onto the baseboard.

A couple of chickens were interested in what I was doing. Others couldn't give a rat's behind. Dusting in the wood chips was more important than my project.

I installed the skirt on the front in the same way. Had to go buy some landscape pins (giant staples) to hammer through the screen into the ground to prevent it from working its way up over time. I had a big pile of dirt mixed with coarse sand that I used to cover the screen.

I pulled out the garden hose and soaked the dirt over the skirting to help it settle and compact overnight. I feel like the chicks are pretty safe now. I'm not even going to lock them in the coop tonight. Maybe one will roost in the run.

Anyway. Today was a good day! Even got the lawn mowed, which was actually a break from doing real work. Riding the mower around the yard is fun and relaxing to me.
That is a lot of hard work, but worth it!! It looks great! I wish I had laid hardware cloth in the run because the birds like to try to act like they are in The Great Escape!

Thanks! Mine haven't reached the dirt floor yet. There's from 6" to a foot of wood chips as bedding, and I'm going to try to get it to a foot deep over the whole thing. Next project will be to build them a big box full of dirt so they can bathe.

Your kitties sound adorable 😍
Thank you. I love them to bits. You know what I said about them being weird? The bathroom was finally finished yesterday and Elliot decided to eat the left-over tile adhesive...
He'd already shared a homemade samosa and onion bhaji, complete with cucumber raita and pickles with me and Ferdy.

Fabulous job! Well worth all the hard work. I'm glad I don't have to worry about predators except the peregrine falcon that does a fly by every few days.

Busy day in the garden yesterday, including putting the new coldframe up. Stan enjoyed sitting on my shoulder to supervise though he kept squealing a warning at DH if he came too close... Went to bed utterly exhausted hoping to actually sleep for once, only to be rudely awakened at 3 a.m. by aforementioned Stanley crowing like a lunatic, which then set his dad off too. Not amused 😒

In the beautiful land where @TropicalBabies lives. A couple ferals in the parking lot as we ate our lunch. Oh, there were more, speckled, marbled, black, brown, and many other color combos, of all ages.

Today I said goodbye to my chickens. Due to a situation of domestic violence I had to leave the house two days ago.

I'm trying to find a place to take them with me but all I'm able to afford are small apartments. People who have chickens as pets will understand how heartbroken I am... I already miss them...
