What did you do with your flock today?

Today I wrapped up grow out coop #2…installing the doors. I’ve decided I hate doors, they never come out like I plan. I measured so many times and was still off so much I ended up adding extra wood to the frame 😣 They look pretty good despite all the trouble though :)

Some of the babies seemed happy to have visitors…

While others seemed a bit less impressed with the intrusion 😁

This weekend is “get stuff cleaned up” weekend. Sounds super fun…TGIF everyone!
Aaaaaaaaaa! Cuteness overload! 😍

Your coop came out pretty!
I spoke to my vet friend from the course I did. He's coming over next weekend on his day off to examine Stan, see if he can spot the problem.

I'm o.k., thanks. My back is seriously playing up right now - which isn't the best timing given how much needs doing round here but, hey, that's life. How are you doing?

It is definitely not hot here. In fact, we're experiencing our first semi-warm, dry spell in at least a month. It has been so wet, I'm surprised the chickens haven't evolved webbed feet!
I'm not good with heat, I don't know how you cope with it. 105° sounds like the fires of Hell to me! We hit those sort of temps for a couple of weeks 2 years ago and I had wringing wet sheets over the coop and run to provide somewhere cooler and shady for everyone. I went out at one point to find Gladys and Connie stood up to their bellies in our garden 'pond' (it's not much bigger than a half barrel) 😆. I don't know how you deal with those temps every year, hats off to you!
Weathers the same here....in the 100's already off and on. Took me 30 some years to adjust to the heat and I still dream of cool, wet, green places...lol.

Us humans are never satisfied, are we? Always wanting what we don't have! 😆 Trust me, if you'd had the prolonged rain we've had, you'd be longing for your beautiful desert. At least you're not up to your ankles in sticky, smelly mud...😂
I don't think I'd ever adjust to heat - I swear DH and I are the only people on the planet to go to somewhere like Thailand for 3 weeks and come back paler than when we went 🤣

How are your miracle kitties, btw?

I left the brooder doors open today, all day. The latest hatch are doing well, keeping out of the hens' way, but darting in between their legs when I was casting grape bits to the flock. I purposely cut up the fruit into tinier pieces in case any of the littlest ate them.

The juvies, aka cockerels were very active at roosting time, and I think they irritated the hens.

Ouch!

They're headed for the auction on Saturday, but I may keep one (or 2) since I don't currently have a rooster. Decisions, decisions...

Pretty boys and girls 😍
I like the look of the little bright-eyed chap at the back of your last photo. He's got a lovely little twinkle in his eye 🤩

That's LC, Little Chick. He was pecked in the head as a 2 day old. I found him limp and unresponsive although he was breathing. My tender heart was stirred, and I put him under my shirt so he could die in comfort. About 10-15 minutes later he started peeping. I gave him back to the broody. He got pecked again, badly, the next day, had a hole in his head! That's when I put Martha and all her chicks in a brooder, away from the flock. LC got B complex and E with a syringe for a couple days until he fought me so hard that I figured he was going to make it. It took him a few weeks but he caught up developmentally with the others.

The perpetrator of the attacks was my rooster, so now I need another rooster.

I love a good story of chick survival! What a great chicken tender you are! I think you did all the right things for him. Maybe he will be the one to replace your mean old rooster some day?

I haven't yet decided who is going to auction and who isn't, except for the (oops) Dominique cross.

In keeping with my Bible names, LC could become Zacchaeus (the wee little man).

He's definitely a keeper then! But I do love an underdog...

Me too.

The cockerels are 8 weeks old, it's hard to decide which one to keep. The adult feathers aren't in, the personality is not set due to raging hormones, but I cannot keep them any longer. My coop is on the verge of chaos and I have no place to house them.

Why did all five have to be boys?!

I would keep LC without hesitation. Once I've rescued a chicken from anything, it becomes a beloved pet. He is a strong cockerel to have survived, and it seems to me he has a less than overbearing personality since he was picked on.

I was lucky enough to get @Smokerbill's cockerel who had been picked on by the dominant cockerel, although nothing like what LC went through. He is a sweetheart of a rooster now and treats his ladies well. He is a bit skittish around people, but very protective at the same time.

Our 2 1/2 mo old chicks had a sort of spat over something while I was out there and he came running to check it out and break it up if necessary. I didn't see what exactly happened, but I hope I don't have an ornery little cockerel coming on the scene. I would actually like to keep him and have two roosters, but they do have to get along.
