What did you do with your flock today?

@kurby22 the dwarfs are doing great except for Biscotti. Biscotti's never been sick a day in her life...yet at the same time, she's never truly been healthy. She seems to struggle with regulating her temperature. In the summer she was visibly struggling with the heat in way our other birds don't. Wings out, panting etc. But she got by and stayed ok between deep shade and wading bowls. Then fall came, and for a while she was happy and vigorous. Then winter and she fluffs ands so obviously cold that I ended up bringing her onto the porch and giving her a heat lamp. No signs of illness at all...just extreme reactions to temperature changes. Her she is enjoying her heat lamp in an old parrot cage.

Its a big cage...but not a good life. I'm uncertain what else to do though. She needs a temp controlled greenhouse type coop i think.

The other greenfire dwarfs are gorgeous, vigorous birds. The lavender has the feather shredder gene though. Beautiful color, but look at that tail!

None of the Greenfire birds have laid yet...and I've yet to see a roo even try to mount a girl. O but they are pretty!

And Char's dwarfs (my long time dwarfs) are doing wonderful! Every now and then they throw an unusual baby. I'd so love to know what genes made this boy...i see blue..but what made that red breast???? I've no ideas at all 😂. He's the only bird like him that's hatched though.

All the rest of the birds all look like pages from the same book. Lots of good blues ....and the rest look like the Greenfire birds.

Im keeping the Greenfire birds separate from Char's birds and just enjoying the two flocks.
I'd love to do some trading in spring! I got my Isabel oegb over the summer too. They're an f2 generation, so early breeding still...but pure oegb. I'll have to get some pictures of them and share the fun personalities I'm seeing in them. I think you'll love them 🥰🥰🥰

Such beautiful chickens!!! :love It looks like a nice big coop. Anyway you could set up a little heated area for Biscotti? Before I had electric in my coop, I ran two 100' outdoor extension cords out there, with a water proof connection, to be able to supply heat to keep water from freezing and heat for chicks when I raised them out there. It worked fine. Happy to have the electric now, but it was a temporary fix. Just a thought.

Might be doable. Definitely a good idea worth exploring ❤️

The girls are steady and safe. Lost a couple to what may have been reproductive issues. One was a Blue Sapphire, the other was Onyx's baby who was half BS, with BCM and Cream Legbar. No more predation since the electric fence installation. Have been having 4 pullets out of 13 molting since fall started , so they aren't laying. Unusual but not impossible, I guess? One of the leghorns has had a bumble on the top of her foot, which doesn't impede her gait at all. Those leghorns are so skittish, though, and being that she roosts on the top of the inside roof rafter makes her hard to catch to do surgery. Condensation on the tarps have been making the soil damp in the run, but at least the place where they dust bathe is staying dry. How were your Holidays? Happy New Year!
It's good to hear things are mostly good.
I had Ferdy, Pru AND Clara suffering with bumblefoot at the same time in November. Ferdy's was not bad so I just kept an eye on his and cleaned his foot with antiseptic daily for a week. It soon disappeared. Clara had bumble on both feet with some redness so she had hers thoroughly cleaned and corn plasters stuck on them before bandaging. Any tips on bandaging feathered feet as I suck at it?
Pru had a really nasty bumble on her left foot and the beginnings of one on her right foot. The left foot required minor surgery and a course of antibiotics. Neither girl was at all happy with me.
I couldn't understand how they all had it at the same time until I noticed them scratching up a bag of rose prunings full of thorns.
Keep a close eye on your girl as I'm sure you know bumble can cause bone infection and eventually kill if untreated. It's such hard work when they won't allow you to pick them up easily, though. Gladys only gets a monthly foot inspection because of this. Everyone else is weekly.
Penelope had a huge moult before she started laying so maybe it's not that strange your pullets are moulting - although 4 out of 13 sounds a lot.
So glad you're not having predator problems now. And sorry for your losses.
Holidays were good. Back at work tomorrow- ugh! How were yours?
Happy New Year!

I've missed so much! I'm so sorry about your kitty @ kurby...and so glad they have you to help them through.:hugs:hugs:hugs
Im glad your Moe had you too Shetland. Older animals often have a hard time finding homes even when they're perfect. What a blessing Moe found in you! ❤️
Moe was a great example of the Cat Distribution system in action. A neighbour's cat I'd known since kittenhood actually brought him to my kitchen door then left him after a few minutes. I don't care how old an animal is, if they need help then I will do my best. Just like you.
I'm so sorry about your ducks :hugs

I can't even think about that part of it. A pox on all people like that though. Because they left the dogs in a fenced yard, the shelter couldn't help them at first. They needed the owners permission to enter the property. Finally my neighbor found a way to get the dogs off the property and all got help. She kept the boy, brought me pregnant momma, and got the other girl into another home. She was too grumpy with the shelter in the end, so none of those poor babies ended up there. What a wonderful woman she is ❤️
It does my heart good to know there's still such wonderful people in the world ❤

Oh my! They are just too beautiful 😍😍😍
Being small they could be a good fit for me. If I'm ever 'allowed' more birds.
I'm so sorry to hear about Biscotti. She's such a sweetheart. I wonder what's causing it?
She sounds a bit like Stan in that she's not sick but not entirely 'right' either. With Stan, it's his breathing. He sounds like he smokes 60 a day. He's sounded like he had a serious respiratory infection for over a year now, even resting you can hear him wheezing and he's worse if he gets over excited or exerts himself. In all other respects he's fit as a fiddle. He's super alert, eats like a horse and has such glossy feathers. He's had every test, antibiotic and antiviral under the sun, all to no avail. Chickens sure are a mystery at times!
