What did you do with your flock today?

P
Yeah I think she's pre-broody cuz she for first time ever pecked me when I went to pick her up! But then she was fine once in my lap. Yeah poop looks normal for all of em and I've double checked em for mites and stuff again.
I tend to worry easily...and she is my fav in every way so it's probably me too!
But I will definitely remember the calcium!
I am so glad ♡♡♡ I know she is your favorite (🤫 don't tell the others...) and was worried for you. Glad she is good 👍. Broody b4 egg must be a breed thing 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Good morning gang.
September 11. all stay well today.
🖤🖤

Your going to have to give me a tutorial on how to make those flowers, I know they won't look as good in my run but i still want to know how 😁. You have that golden touch.

Yeah, Schultz's tail is to the side. My boy did that when down too. Must be a chicken signal that he is not feeling well or is not a threat. Funny how he is checking on the pups. Silly ♡
Yeah...he's having to use his tail to help balance so it's always to one side or the other. You know, I'd never noticed that though...I'll file that away as another sickness sign. He was scratching the bottom of the cage today. That's the first time I've seen him scratch since he got sick.
The flowers are really easy to make...I have a chicken feed bag of cans saved for them so I'll make a few more with pictures as I go 😃.
Honey got some more scrambled eggs tonight with crushed egg shells and vitamins and she devoured it. 4 eggs! So she may not be eating chicken feed yet but at least she’s eating something! ❤️ She loves to snuggle, I wish I cud have a house chicken. She’s the sweetest. Couple more days and she’s gonna upgrade to the outside kennel with more space and some babies to hang out with.
I'm so glad she ate well! Eggs such good food for them too. Have you tried antibiotics and probiotics in case something mores going on then a hard molt? My neighbor uses fish antibiotics...I don't know what's available in those. But tetracycline is a broad spectrum they used to sell otc for use in chickens. You add it to the water and refresh every 24 hours. I can give you the correct dosage if you can find some and want to try it. I give them a good dose of kefir (probiotics) first, then kefir and antibiotics for 7 days, then kefir by itself for 2 weeks. The kefir and antibiotics are in separate dishes, and when the antibiotics are done, water is offered in a separate bowl at all times. I use milk kefir for the added nutrients and make the kefir myself. You can buy kefir starter on Amazon... everythings on Amazon these days...lol. Anyhow, the kefir grains digests lactose so it's easy on the chickens system and heavy on the good, live bacteria. You can mix it with some chicken crumbles, eggs or whatever to help get them started eating it. Hope your Honey continues to improve...she sounds like just the sweetest darling.
Ok wait! I missed something….she made the flowers! @ChicksnMore i wanna know how you made them too! 😁😁😁
Will share! They're easy and fun to make ❤️

I walked too much and there were way too many steps to go up and down yesterday. I can go up steps just fine, but going down them hurts...and silly thing that I am, I don't want to limp so I try to walk normal instead of turning sideways like I need to when going down. 🙄 I really should know better then that at my age...but :idunno . Anyhow, today's a sit and do nothing day. I wasn't thinking when I said "sure honey, let's go to a game!"

Blah.

So thank you guys for asking about flowers...lol. It gives me something to do while I wait for my foot to stop yelling at me!

Oh so glad she's eating!!! She still looks so pitiful in that last pic! Poor girl!

Yep....Satins are pretty much a Silkie and they are known for being able to "hatch a rock" they stay so broody.
My first 2 girls were very determined broodys but not before layin!
I even had one so determined that she camped outside the coop on the 70% angled coop ramp!!! She was the worst!
Back to grandkidding again (mom n dad needed a date night lol)

@ChicksnMore .
Most exciting!!! :ya :jumpy:jumpy:bun
Also, you know how horses yawn and lower their head to signal when sick or wounded? That is how I interpreted it. My boy did not have balance issues and the closer he got to another chook (through wire) the more his tail went down. I swear they are mini horses.

What I am doing with my flock today is- I am going to pack chicks up and head down the hill for the day. My son requested me lol ♡♡♡ and I wanna go for a ride with my hubby plus check in with lower flock. Pi'i decided the mini coop roost was hers- theirs.

so, that leaves the roo pens open. It is time for me to wind down up here anyways. 😭😭😭😭 not sure if I am going to leave them with DH but it would solve their Sq footage problem. The boys are being boys- some challenging going on and I don't want it to escalate to picking on because of lack of space. We will see.

Yesterday I sewed a whopping 12 bags! I can get so obsessive and it feels really good lol. Part of my workaholic-ness is alive and well. So, had better get to prepping my morning for my day.
Hope all have an awesome day today!

Ok..can flowers! I'm breaking it into sections. So first up is sunflowers.

Supplies: tin snips, regular scissors, assorted cans like coffee cans, veggie cans, soup cans etc.
Any kind of paint, and varnish is optional. I tend to use metal spray paint or acrylic craft paint. But I've used house paint and a friend gave me some plastic paint I used on a few... I'm waiting to see how well it lasts. I think the paints used on model cars would probably last best but have never tried it. I tend to use what's on hand from other things.
Polycrylic varnish helps the paint last longer ...marine spar varnish helps even more.
Direct sun fades some paints and not others and repainting lasts longer then the first paint job...no idea why though. Spray paint is easiest, but acrylic fades slower and seems to last longer.

Cut straight down the side with tin snips.
20220911_153410.jpg

If it's a big can like a coffee can and the tin snips don't cut deep enough, then finish the cut with regular scissors. End each cut at one of the grooves in the can. Those groves make it easy to bend out the petals. I work across...so one cut, then flip the can and do another directly opposite, then cut down the middle of each half so you have for quarters, then cut down the middle of each quarter so you have 8 petals.
20220911_153949.jpg

Bend out each petal.
20220911_154329.jpg

Cut off the lip.
20220911_154420.jpg

Cut one corner of each petal to shape.
20220911_154748.jpg

Flip over and cut the other corner of each petal.
20220911_160912.jpg

Shape the petals and paint.

To hang...you can use a nail to punch two holes in the center and I use rebar wire to tie it to whatever...a fence, a pole etc. If your attaching to wood you can screw it in place. A green painted rebar post can make a flower stalk if you want a flower stake to stick in the ground.

I'll do the drink can flowers next.😃

Ok...drink cans. You can really do about anything with drink cans. I have a goofy owl I made from them in a moment of boredom...lol. I've made them into little agaves and all kinds stuff.
For those flowers I use the same materials as the last flowers except no tin snips needed.
You poke one end of the scissors straight down into the can. For the double flower I cut the can into two unequal halves. The top of the can should be the longer half and the bottom of the can is the shorter half. For the other flower I cut the top off.

20220911_172426.jpg
20220911_172522.jpg

Then cut into 8 petals and shape them for the double flower.
20220911_173203.jpg

Then stack them and you can glue them together or punch holes and wire them or screw them. I tend to glue with liquid nails. Just make sure your glue is rated for water if they're out where it can get wet.

Paint and hang or attach to a stake. The can top tab makes a handy hanger so you don't need to poke holes through the bottom.

The can we cut the top off of you don't need to shape. You put your scissors on the backside of each petal and pull...just like curling a ribbon. The harder you pull, the tighter the curl...so you might want to pull gently. You can loosen the curl some after if it's too tight.
