What did you do with your flock today?

Today I let my flock free range all day while I got ready for hurricane Henri tomorrow. I packed up everything in the yard? Set up a safer cage for the next 24 hours for them so I made sure they had all day to be out and about since they will be “cooped up” (pun intended) in a safe cage for the storm. They seemed to enjoy the day until it got too hot. The went in the coop for a bit but came back out two hours later to roam some more. Hoping we don’t get slammed. The power company said 30-50% could be without power for up to ten days and it’s going to be in the 90s all week! Ugh. Fingers crossed.
Good luck! 🤞🤞

How do you sex silkie?.

Cockerel show themselves early.

I supplemented for darker yolks, I cleaned a lot, I spent time with them hanging out while they dust bathed, and some were hypnotized by watching themselves in the camera..

Aloha gang! Well I gave in and installed BYC on my phone. So I can keep up with your goings on and even respond. Oh yippee!
Let my flock out of the run this morning as I was down the mountain yesterday and they were locked up till 5pm. My mealworms have been taking off- all that work has been really paying off so I am able to give them protein treats in the eve... now they wont leave me alone. Stalkers!
Have a regular coming to pick up (hopefully) a few cockerels and some chicks I have been growing out today. DH will handle that- they already do business with horse poop-
20210825_145856~2.jpg Had to add Ivan because he is so pretty though, still a dork. 20210825_145952~2.jpg 20210825_145945~2.jpg 20210825_134421.jpg 20210825_134416.jpg
Basically just going to prep the run because I have to go down the mountain again for MIL visit- maybe add some more mulch from an awesome stash I found a few miles down a hunting trail road, to keep the smells down. There really are not a lot of bugs up here for them to pick at. Moths and spiders. Not the roach and geckoville they are used to.
MIL came up last weekend. She suffers from dementia so it is a all hands on deck thing... she loved the chickens... and they loved her ♡

A most excellent lady ♡ ok... and try not to laugh... this is the little critter that took an interest in my chicks in the outside brooder 1.5 months ago. I fed her so she would not cause trouble and because she was young enough that she may be ok with being socialized... and to keep her too full to eat native birds. She now sleeps with me, is playful as all get up and purrs up a storm. Now, to get her fixed and find her a home... 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Anybody??? 20210826_091815~2.jpg

I, strangely enough, have never had a rat do any damage yet. They do harvest the mangos and will stash them in our workshop or steal from my compost but that has been about it so far jjj obviously robbing feed too. My hens have not had any eggs stolen from their forest nests (yet)... oh well, other than me that is... No chick damage or even interest. Must be vegans.
