What did you do with your flock today?

Could she have a skin issue? I bought a Brahma rescue, and she came with swollen skin, on her face, neck, irritated looking legs. No mites, so I made a salve with coconut oil, and some essential oils, frankincense, lavender, tea tree. With daily application she responded well and improved quickly over less than 2 weeks. She was also molting at the time.
Yeah, maybe. It couldn’t hurt to try what you did. Did you notice any improvement before the 2 weeks?
@FrankieDoodle
I poked around a bit but found basically nothing too. My first thought on your beautiful girl was age. I wonder if you could start a thread in emergencies and get some answers from the very smart regulars that hang there.

Then tag us as I am real curious about this one 😉. In all your spare time that is lol.. I think my Buffs are more fragile than my other chooks. I hope she is ok ♡♡♡
Yeah, that might be a good idea. I PM’d a few people who frequent the E/D/M&C forum back when I first noticed it happening, but no luck.
Is the swelling both sides of her face, FrankieDoodle?
Yes, it looks like it’s her entire body. Head, comb, wattles, face, feet and legs. I assume it’s the same under her feathers, but she’s really fluffy so it’s hard to tell.
I can just picture the sun making rainbows through that glass as you shower! My youngest tried to make an aurora with colored bottles when she was little...she got so mad at me for trying to explain that she couldn't throw the light into an empty night sky! So I shut up and just helped her try. Its a fun memory ❤️

Wow what a change! I had thought she was like the white faced Spanish who's face skin seems to swell and thicken as they age. No ideas here but I like @TropicalBabies suggestion. There's so many knowledgeable people on here who might have good ideas about it. Hope she does well Frankie ❤️

I've always wanted cream legbars. Someday maybe.
So that'd be the white leghorn or white rock genes carrying the recessive white right?

That's so duck 🤣

Aaaaa! Squishy tubs of baby lard! Give them and momma little hugs and scritches for me 😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks!
Could it be botulism?
I don’t think so, I haven’t noticed any of the common symptoms in her or anyone else in the flock.

I wonder if it could be some sort of allergy/reaction to something she’s eating. Although I don’t know how to narrow that down without completely separating her and changing her diet, and I don’t want to stress her out so that’s not really doable.

I did see her eating and then later bathing, so that’s really good. A few days ago I had to help her of the perches and she spent the day in the nest, so while all of her symptoms are still there, that’s still an improvement.

Are her joints hot and/or swollen? I just re-read your original post and you said It's been gradual. Sorry, I must have missed that somehow! Obviously that rules out a lot of diseases and ailments.

OMGeeze it is 19° here this morning! My nostrils froze up when I went out to let the babies outta coop!
How do yall keep the mash from freezing back up after doing warm water in it?! This winter is gonna be as difficult as the summer was!!!
I'm so glad we don't have to cope with such hard winters here. I'm sick to death of the perpetual rain though, much rather it was cold and dry!

Ouch that's cold! We don't get that cold here so I'm not very helpful there. But I know they sell water bowls that plug in to keep the water from freezing. Probably not good for mash, but always warm water might help. Sorry it's so cold there!

🌺Happy Aloha Saturday all.
Been a bit busy here with people things- dropped another stand w/bags and then we had to deal with our fence posts- but the eve b4 last I was able to spend about 15 very enjoyable minutes feeding the littles fun, delicious mealworms.
Last eve after the evening feeding of the horses DH and I rode Boo & Bee to the Kawai'ele water bird sanctuary a few miles down the road. What a great form of meditation after a hard day's work dealing with fence posts.
In the eves many birds fly in to safely rest for the night

My photos are pretty junk but if you look (hard) you can see 3 flying kukuluae'o, 6 young nene geese and the shadowy figures of 2 ope'ape'a bats and their reflection on the water. We also got to enjoy 2 other notable waterfowl like the aukuu and the ulili. The thick silence of the Mana plains only to be broken by these wild sounding birds. Pretty awesome.
A couple more posts to go at the pasture. The ground termites have eaten through just about everything we have installed so far. Hoping this Kiawe wood will dull their chompers. 🤞
Also, rodeo this weekend! So gal should be coming for her cockerels!!!
That means I would have sold all 6 and raised $60 more bucks for the KHS!!! 😸

That was us here too! And it was 6 degrees with windchill. My poor ducks pond was so frozen I couldn’t break it. They have been spending the day inside their house. The chickens have come out but are all huddled together. I even got more windbreakers today but can’t put them up yet because it’s just too windy. I don’t have any advice for you or I would give it. I’m still trying to figure it out myself. 😔

Did you notice any improvement before the 2 weeks?
Absolutely. Within two - three days. All normal by the end of two weeks. Here is the salve:
In a small glass jar,

3 Tbsp. Virgin coconut oil (liquify in warm water)

Mix in essential oils:
12 drops lavender
6 drops Frankincense
6 drops Copaiba
6 drops Tea Tree

This is roughly a 2.5 % dilution. When I treated my girl, I carefully did around her eyes, and put it most elsewhere on her red, scaly, swollen skin as much as I could, parting feathers, etc. Even getting it on most of her will have a systemic effect as her skin absorbs the essential compounds and it will be in her bloodstream. Good luck, keep us posted. So sad to see them not completely healthy.

Where are you located? You might update your profile for general location, i.e. county and state.

Sounds like a lovely day all round. And what a beautiful place to end the day!
