What did you do with your flock today?

Got woken up at 5:45 by my yowling “outdoor” cat wanting to be let in the house and a cacophony of crowing…mornings are so peaceful here 🤪🤪🤪

So I was up and out with the birds by 6:45 and took some time to look over all the molting progress, rousting screeching broody silkies, and fed them their organic greens. Everyone seems to be handling the molting and egg laying has picked up again.

I also had to get a picture of Alfredo, the Watermaal because his hackles are so wild he looks like he’s been on a serious bender. 😆

What breed lays those beautiful big blues?

I let my chickens out to forage early today, starting around 2PM. An hour later I noticed that they decided to explore a lot farther away than I'm comfortable with so I hopped on my riding mower and used it to herd them back to the house. The big, loud, yellow and black mower kind of scares them so it worked really well! LOL
Better than trying to herd ones that don't come or get lured by treats thrown in the coop run. My old lady BSL just looks at me, and all my efforts to get her inside before her normal roosting time are in vain. Some of the other girls are following her lead. :barnie

Time for an update. They have been locked up for safety, and were let out for an hour or so in the evening yesterday. Does anyone else have a sleepless night after losing one to a predator?

Yesterday, I thought to rig up the tarp roof so that the rain would run off into rock filled pots, so as not to splash onto their dirt floor and make it muddy. Went to take down the aviary netting that DH had piled up on the roof. Well, the escapee girls from this summer had decided to use the nice, soft, netting to lay eggs. Looking back, now I know why they were trying to get on the roof. I gathered 10 eggs, and of course, they were all done. Threw them in the garden to recycle. The netting was a huge tangle, but with a little patience hgot it spread out on the lawn. Now that I can see where we had to cut a big hole to untangle the apple tree before it was moved, I'll try to salvage the largest piece I can to maybe use as a hawk deterrent between trees.
Thank you to all for your kind words and condolences.

I thought you were going to confine your chickens for 30 days because they ticked you off?
Kind of reminds me of what I told my kids about their restrictions from video games, and then they know I forget how long I said, or forget where I hid them, only to find them months or years later. That was before getting old. Lol!

One left to go, but she has her head up. Thought FORSURE I was going to lose her. Like i thought she had like a 2% chance. She was just mush.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who'd hide her kids video stuff and forget where 🤣

Took the new chicken for a walk today! She's really good, though flappy, and seemed to enjoy the walk. Had to hold her so she wouldn't run away because I don't have a chicken harness yet *cough cough* :p

None my Cornish girls have been out of their coop now for a couple of weeks or so it seems. They think it has been years. It's been a couple of days since the White Giants busted out for a romp to the woods. I've started saving eggs from the Bresse, Dark Cornish, & White Giants to set Monday or Tuesday if all goes well.
