What did you do with your flock today?

Gooses new collar came today. I didn't realize that he can only wear it 12 hours a day or it can cause pressure sores. I should have researched a little better before I bought.
But, on the good side...I can now wake Goose when he's sleeping without having to walk over and nudge him. Very happy about that. I swear he can hear a little when he's awake, but when he's sleeping he hears nothing. I can stand right next to him and whistle til the cows come home and there's no response until I touch him, then he's all joy after the startle. Vibration works a treat. Also, I looked and there are vibration only collars that hopefully can be worn 24/7. Waking him without having to walk to him is enough by itself...but hoping it keeps him safe during hay delivery as well when we have gates open, and strangers and trucks driving around the property. Would be nice if he can join me and the other dogs then and not have to be leashed or confined to keep him safe.

This afternoon we had an easy job putting a netting over the brooder that allows us easy access to the chicks and keeps them from flying the brooder. That allows them another 4 weeks of staying inside in the sun room addition before they get put in a hoop coop outside to enjoy the winter's air. Of course winter here is like a spring up north. The brood is made up of two hatches a week apart. I loved it how the older ones kind of showed the younger ones how the feed and water worked. I'm going to do this again as soon as I can get the hens back on track laying even if I have to get a light to come on 3-4 hours earlier. They have been on vacation long enough for someone who gets fed the way they do.

🌺Happy Aloha Friday!!!!
I hope everyone has a terrific weekend planned.

Nice job on the collar @ChicksnMore ! Yeah, I hate not getting stuff perfect the first time too 😂 live and learn. Least most days I get another shot at trying again and things do seem to get better as I go.
Poor little goose. I did not know he was so bad. Least you still have him and he is a loving pup and total character 💖

Today was a mellow day, good weather, nice temps and all was quiet. I let the chooks out to freerange early. They had a few admires stop by to talk to them and take photos. Cute. Pretty much the same ol, same ol.
Kitties go for their travel check tomorrow. ☹️

I've never met a dog like Goose ..he's a joyful baby though ❤️

Hugs to kitties on their trip! Hope that goes easy and smooth.

Most everything went well with the kids today. One minor mishap. When we went out to close coop doors tonight our white giants were roosting on top of their coop because their door was closed. We were able to get that fixed with a flashlight and a 2x4. Now they are all on their correct roosting spots acting like the ladies they are. Not sure how it got closed other than a wind gust somehow did it which is most unusual for the way it gets braced open when they get let out of a morning. I do love working with the white giant pullets that are soon to be hens. They can just be so sweet when I hold one or put my cheek up next to then and then they sing a little diddy of special song for me.
What did you use the 2x4 for?

  ;)

Thank you! That's very helpful. Sounds like it'd be best to just use vibrate for look at me, and signals from there. He's learned hand signals for sit, down and stay already, and I learned some ASL when my youngest was little. ASL was her first language. I can't actually remember much of it anymore but it'll make it easier to pick back up. I like the idea of people besides me being able to communicate with him.

I'm lucky because hes eager to please. He learns well but its my first time with a deaf animal so we're learning together. I can see he hears something sometimes, so I kept trying to find something he can always hear. A crazy loud whistle usually works when he's close but not always, and not at all at a distance. I'd never thought about how much I talk to my animals and how much that matters.

Your Ruby's very lucky! Taking on an adult dog with existing behavior problems is really hard. I'm really glad you were able to make it work.
How about a dog whistle?

Yesterday I was out doing annual medical visits, had a bunch of errands planned, but my car started making loud rattling noises.

So instead of running errands I left the car with my mechanic and spent a productive afternoon in the yard, setting up my two new raised beds. I kept finding insects in the dirt, and I would walk over to the coop to offer each insect by pushing it through the HWC.

Maybe that's why some of the gals sit on the perches that face the gardens, and watch?
;)

I did one run around the coop area with the lawnmower, and the flock was enthusiastic about the huge pile of leaves and winter weeds that I dumped in front of them. Martha hopped on top and sank down to her belly, wish I had a picture of it!
:gig

Raised beds are now assembled and lined with cardboard, my leaf lettuce and collards now have more winter protection, and my flock had a treat of leaves, too.

(remains of the leaf pile are around him)

And my Good Ol' Boy mechanic got the fender reattached and secured, and for a modest fee, thank you!
