What did you do with your flock today?

I took a drive down to the store to get a bag of layer pellets this morning, and for the heck of it decided to check out the loading dock at the grocery store to see if there was any throw-away produce available.

I ended up getting three banana boxes half full of all sorts of stuff for the chickens. Bagged salads, cabbage leaves, probably 10 pounds of tomatoes, small gourds and some kiwi fruit. Should keep them happy with fresh veggies for a while.

There were also five 1 pound bags of small potatoes. Guess I'll save them and use them for seed potatoes next spring.

Bought a 50# bag of layer pellets on the way back home too, so the chickens are all set for a while.

Great foraging! You’ll have some happy chickens for a few days!

If those potatoes are not organic they will not sprout and make potatoes. Potatoes get sprayed with a chemical that just slows their sprouting way way down. The chances of getting them to make a potato plant is poor odds in Vegas.

Yes I will! But I sure wish my chickens would eat cabbage. They won't touch the stuff. They eat kale and they eat Brussels spouts leaves, but cabbage, no way. I threw it all in the run anyway. They can grind it up into compost for me. And maybe it'll attract some bugs.

I didn't check the tags on the bags. If they're not organic, guess I could cook them and feed mashed taters to the chickens.

Have you tried hanging cabbage heads in the run at their eye level for them to try to destroy?

Wow! Sweet grocery store!! Sounds like you’re going to have some very content and happy chickens! ❤️

I am with the chickens on this own. Cabbage is not something I enjoy. It lacks in all the things that make food taste good 😆😆
