What did you do with your flock today?

Thanks. You're right.. I remember a youtube on Edwardian or Victorian farmers, and they were afraid to feed young children fruit, because they mistook regular "runs" for dysentery.

Do you core the apples? I read once that the seeds aren't good for them. I have an old apple tree full of fruit, and it would be nice to be able to just toss a 1/2 doz. in the run.

Great news. Thanks!
Yeah, chickens eat a lot of stuff that will supposedly cause them problems or kill them, depending on what you read. I think they'd have to eat a whole lot of apple seeds to cause problems, even if they are actually a problem.

There's something in apple seeds that the human digestive system converts into cyanide, which is deadly, but again, it would take a boatload of apple seeds to cause a problem. And since the chicken digestive system is different than human's, would the cyanide even be produced?

My daughter's in law chickens at a whole tomato plant with no problem, and they're supposedly poisonous to chickens.

I have 6 chickens and 3 teenage chicks and the 3 chicks( 2 hens, 1 rooster ) finally hit puberty and went from cheeps to little raspy clucks!!! And these 3 chicks are some of the most docile chickens! We ( me and my dad ) got 3 hens and 1 rooster for free from one of his coworkers and we already had some chickens - some casualties, but ours were already peaceful but feisty chickens and when we got the others we mixed them up and when one of our chickens had 3 chicks with our new rooster they turned out so peaceful and they just run up and let me pick them up! Even the rooster! This just shows and proves that the way you raise and animal really effects its personality!
Well said! I think it makes a huge difference how you raise an animal. Raise them with love, respect and compassion and they will return it. You can never totally change their individual nature -nor should you want to- but I know from experience you can make it work.

It has rained nonstop here for 48 hours. And I mean a deluge, not just soft, gentle rain. Ferdy has obviously gotten bored of sitting in the coop as he opened the kitchen door at about 2.30 and brought everyone inside. They're all getting dry and tucking into scrambled egg and broccoli - except Ferdy, who is ensconced on my shoulder, sharing my quesadilla and looking very proud of himself!

I checked leg bands.

First I sprinkled at my feet some shredded cheese bits (from the bottom of a bag), and picked up each chicken as they crowded around. Joanna, Priscilla, and Silas needed a looser band. Esther's was okay. Martha's band was missing, and Hannah's was very faded, so they each got new bands as well. I didn't check the Dominiques, it's easier to do that at night, plus I don't want to agitate Abigail due to her hard molt right now.

Joanna (almost 4 months old)

I didn't replace Zack's leg band the last time I checked and removed it for being tight...I know which one he is!

Thank you!

They're Speckled Sussex, bantams. I wanted a heritage breed that was friendly, and found a local source for day old chicks. I'm planning on breeding the best to the best and seeing how close I can get to Standard.

I never have. Once saw that they ate around the core, and other times eat the seed. They get the ones with the worms. Just not moldy ones. The seeds have a little arsenic, I believe, but my girls are all healthy.
