What did your chickens do today?

Just discovered something funny about our flock. We have motion sensors on the flood lights on our barn. At evening feeding, we don't usually get there until shortly after the sun goes down. The flock doesn't like being in the dark barn. They have discovered that they can turn the floodlight on in front of the barn by milling around under it, and so they do that, every evening. Whenever we go out to feed in the evening, regardless of weather, there most of them are, milling around in their pool of light, waiting for us. As soon as we go in and turn the lights on in the barn, they troop right in behind us, ready for dinner.

It is funny, though I'm a little concerned that if we are later than usual, an owl or something might discover them in their little light pool...

We'll have to rig them a motion sensor light in the barn.

yes I think I figure it out.at least I hope... it did post it though and I had a little help but not much.

Purple comb might mean a heart condition and if she's overweight that might be why. don't feed her chip dip. We feed ours layer or Purina Flock Raiser mixed half and half with cracked corn or scratch grain. They get table scraps but you do have to watch it. I've never fed ours onions. Good guality (not moldy) bread, or fruit, veggies, (no raw white potatoes), spagettti, macaroni and cheese, watermelon, rice, chopped peanuts, sunflower seeds. ,mealworms, are some favorites of ours. They love catfood (especially our peacocks) but it's not very good for them. I read that onions can be toxic to chickens but I don't know what the cure is. Are you sure she ate them? Most chickens don't like them. Raw potatoes (white potatoes) are extremely toxic to chickens, as are their peels, and we actually had two hens die from eating peels out of the compost (I'm sure that's what killed them as they died within hours of each other and had been healthy before). Tnat was when we first had chickens, several years ago. Everyone loses chickens from time to time because they make mistakes, but that's how you learn. Maybe she'll be ok. I think if I were you I'd put her in a pen or cage by herself where she can still hear and see the others. Feed her regular food with maybe some yogurt or fruit, or oatmeal, scrambled eggs, to tempt her to eat, if she's not eating well. But just a little. Also you can search symptoms on this website...like purple comb... or toxic onions...and you'll pull up lots of other threads about people who may have had similar problems. If you don't get much response to your questions it's because there's so much traffic on that forum that your posts don't stay up long.
