What do people think about hybrid or mixed breed chickens ?

Hey, I just learned about 3 new breeds ! I guess I should have known the first one. We had an AmerauCochin at the Fair. I forget what that big fluffy chicken was called with the feather feet.

The Welsummers, never saw what they looked like, just heard their name.

And your last one is very new to me: never heard of that one: Is that the name of the breed: Iowa Blue ? Can you put up another pic of this chicken ? She looks interesting. I do like blue chickens (although white is still my favorite, with a hat).

Thanks !

Thanks, that's what I've heard before.

I'll have to remember that.

1 MARANS, a Marans Hen

It just sounds funny to me. I'll have to keep drilling it into my head !!!

one Marans, one marans, one marans, one marans.

I should make a personal list of "proper" chicken terms. Guess I need to go back and fix all of that on my website. Guess I have a project for myself today.

Thanks !

Thanks, I'll have to check it out ! Is it like a photo gallery game show ?

That's what I was looking for.

Kind of like flash cards for my son to play and guess.

I think this is what they were referring to......it's part of BYC

Yeah, I was hoping for something from the breeders of the hybrid so we do know who the parents are.

Kind of like what we have on here.

I'm enjoying it and wish my son would get home earlier so he could share in all the fun.

Thanks you guys !

I have several hybrids of my own design and if I can keep them breeding true I may get to name a new breed. I sell a ton of pullets every year and when I get a cool looking bird that people like they really do not care about breeds and they usually buy all I have.

That's why we should start a new one with the people posting as the breeders of the hybrids.

I wish I could program something where you have the image of the hybrid, and if you click on it, it will link to the 2 pics of the parents.

That way, anyone could see it, guess it, and then click on it to reveal the answers.

What do you guys think ?

Worthy of bringing it up to the head webmistress/webmaster ?

I think it would enjoyable !

We'll see what the popularity speaks about it.

Thanks again.

I just fixed my webpage and hopefully caught all the "maran" terms and fixed them to read "marans".

I even started my own personal list of improperly spelled chicken terms in my blog. So far, only 2 terms.

We're always all still learning things, aren't we ?

Thanks !

I hatched some mixed breeds this spring. Salmon Faverolle male over Brown Leghorn hens. They were sexable around 4 weeks of age just like the Salmon Leghorns. The hens had silver neck hackle instead of brown and some had muffs/beards. They are calmer than the Brown Leghorns, which is good. They are shaped like the leghorns. Im hoping they will be nice layers once they start. As long as their a great layer, I don't care if they are purebred or not.

When it comes to mixed or hybrids...what seems to be the more dominant genes...the roosters or the hens? Or is it a breed dominant thing.

Or is it like potpourri....you just get a mixture of everything?
