What do we have here?!

So we are starting our flock all over again thanks to a bear attack we had about a year and a half ago. It took me a while to get over all the hard work we had put in to raising our chicks to adults and then have it all be wiped away in one night.

Now that we are getting a new flock, I picked up some chicks from TSC and our local co-op. Since there were no names on the containers for each of these chicks, nor did the folks working there know what breeds, I was wondering if any of you could help me identify these two particular chicks. I believe the first to be a d’uccle chick but I’m not sure what kind and I believe the other might be Australorpe chicks.

#1 is a silkie. You can tell by the black skin and the extra toe, as well as the crest.
#2 might be an Australorp, but she's probably a sexlink or a Jersey Giant. The skin on her feet looks yellow (Australorps should have white skin.) There are, of course, other black chicken breeds, though.

Thank you! I know it is bantam but silkies are cool so I’m excited. I’ll do some more research on chick two. The feathering seemed close to an Australorp chick but I always forget to consider the feet and coloration, lol!

I, for one, would certainly like details of this horrible and frightening occurrence! BEAR ATTACK?? Where do yo live? Was it one bear, or two? Black or brown bear? Did it smash up the coop and/or run pretty badly? I think I would pee my pants if a bear attacked anything on our soon-to-be new home! How terrible!

It was a juvenile black bear! I couldn’t believe it actually got in our coop. It tore our the window and the hardwire we had covering. The sad thing was that it killed and left most of them. Took some back to it’s den that we discovered was only about 150yds out from our driveway. It was pretty scary considering it came back two nights later. I heard him and alerted my husband. With the laws, there’s not much we can do. I’m in VA near the Blue Rudge/Shenandoah area.

That's really horrible. I'm so sorry for your loss!! So - the bear is still there and you have to just live with it? I'm ok with co-existing with most wildlife, but a bear? Yow!
