I put shavings I clean out of the coop right into the run, along with other organic materials. The girls scratch 'em up, eating any bugs and other bits they want.

I more or less constantly add organic materials to my run, and it breaks down so well, I really never remove anything.

I never have to remove anything. However, I do steal some of it for my gardening.

I just shovel it out into the run! They scratch through it thoroughly and it decomposes gradually throughout the year. I use pine shavings, and I clean the whole coop out once in the spring and once in the fall.

BTW, an added benefit of putting weeds into the run is that they (at least in my garden ) are loaded with weed seeds. Many of those seeds are enjoyed by the birds, and the ones they don't eat sprout to yield tender greens. Of course, the birds pick and choose what they will eat, but the rest of that green manure simply gets scuffed back into the DL to nourish the compost. It's a win/win/win situation.
